HOV lane Questions.....rant

I don't care how fast anybody drives, as long as they do it safely and at least the speed limit, not lower. The thing that kills me is how close everybody drives to each other... absolutely no room to change lanes and I always see accidents almost every day on my way home from work because of tailgating.

You'd think people would get a clue.

I also can't stand the people that think they can weave in & out like they have the right of way. If you are late to something, it's not everybody else's fault, you should have departed earlier... don't make it our problem.

Utah Valley is the worst for the "slinky effect". 0->70->0->70 everytime I drive down that way... Frustrating.

When the flow of triffic is 75-80, I'd say stay with the flow of traffic.. It's all relative really.. I see UHP or other LOE's cruising at the speed everyone else is all the time.. someone doing 60mph(unless in the right lanes) is a danger to the rest of the folks on the road when people have to think about braking, blind spots, passing all in the tight traffic patterns that Shane brought up... my two cents..

Shane, the tight, close driving... I thought drafting helped the mpg's ;)

Thanks all for the input. If I do go the speed limit then I keep over to the right hand side of the lanes.

I do hear all of you about Utah County drivers. I moved her from the Washington DC area and I have spent a lot of time driving around Europe. The UC is a totally different driving experience.

I think the best option is to just follow the speed of traffic in your lane. You will always get anxious people that are in a big hurry behind you... If possible, I always move over to let them by, unless doing so will not do them or me any good (heavy close quarters traffic)

If you are in the HOV lane and doing at least the speed limit, make them wait to go around you when the opportunity presents (hov lane opens). Even so, I always try to follow the speed of everybody else ahead of me in the HOV which usually ends up being 65 - 70. :)

60 in any of the left 3 lanes... good lord that belongs on the side of the road dude!

I loathe slow drivers, I can tolerate 65mph, in the right lanes. I don't care what the legal definition of the HOV lane is regarding speed. If you can do the same speed in another lane, don't tie up the HOV lane for someone that happens to need to get somewhere in a timely fashion.

With all due respect, there was not a single bit of surprise on my face when I read you were from Utah County. They must have taught things much differently in the UtCo school system regarding driving. The second you hit the county sign at the point of the mountain, the speed drops 10mph and every Tom, Dick and Jane is cruising 60-65 in the FAST lane, thank god all the right lanes are wide open for passing.

As for gas mileage, most cars are designed to get their optimal mileage ~65-70, with gas prices its sure to piss more off when the have to stay out of their prime because of a pace car :D

X2! "Slower traffic keep right" That means that even if the guy behind you comes flyin up at 100+ MPH it is YOUR responsability to move to the right-even if that means you have to hit the gas to more quickly pass the car on your right. The cops regulate the speed, not the citizens.

I do my best to make up for those people :D Really though, the only time people go that slow down here is when there is just too much traffic. The corner in the freeway in Lindon has ALWAYS (since the freeway was built) slowed traffic down... regardless of traffic volume. It didn't used to matter much when traffic was thinner, but now that it's heavy all the time that slow down can back up all the way to the point of the mountain.

Oh and, if you can get out of someone's way without going out of your way... DO IT

There are a few of us that would prefer to go 95 all the time.:D Unfortunately, traffic isn't about averages. All it takes is 4 people that decide they want to be stupid and BOOM, the whole freeway is goin 55! The county lines are funny, I drive from lehi to kaysville every week or two and the same thing happens when you cross into davis county as well as utah county. I prefer to drive with my cruise on and it amazes me that on a non crowded sunday afternoon about the time I hit bountiful I'm passing people who BLEW past me somewhere around midvale! And I haven't changed my speed at all since lehi! It seems like crossing the county line out of SL co. just makes people slow down.

I'm sure others have seen the unmarked Toyota Camrys... Sometimes hard to pick them out..

They are very hard to pick out ................... until the red and blues come on behind you in the carpool lane with only one person at 87 MPH! Then you notice them REAL quick.

That's a scenario I completely disagree with. Slower traffic should stay right, but no where does that give somebody the right to fly through going 100 MPH and expect others to move out of their way. That's ridiculous and dangerous.

I hope you have really good insurance and don't ever kill anybody...

x2, 100 mph is quite excessive, at that point that person driving may think themselves above the law and everyone should move out of the way, just because they are going faster. You share the road, you don't own it....

This is a strange phenomenon that I've observed as well. I don't understand it at all. I think it's that Beck Street overpass. That's a scary part of road for some reason.:rofl:

Thanks all for the input. If I do go the speed limit then I keep over to the right hand side of the lanes.

so let me get this straight. You go the speed limit in the far right lane, but go to the HOV lane to slow down?

If cars are passing you (HOV or otherwise) move right. Seems simple enough.

Also, I find it kind of amazing that someone who says "money is tight" would be driving around a $40,000 V8 suv and then drive below the speed limit to try and push their economy from 10 to 10.237 mpg. If you're only hauling two kids, do you need that vehicle? If you can't afford your car, then get one you can. You could take that $1000 per month you spend on insurance/car/fuel and put it into a supercharged education for those kids and encourage them to use those fancy high dollar smarts that you paid for with your "needless vehicular excess" fund to develop a hover car that will solve all traffic and pollution problems forever.

I get anxious, but as long as people are doing at least the speed limit I can't get that mad.

BTW, California is by far the worst so far as slow drivers in the slow lane is concerned. I had to come down I-5 once and it's 2 lanes each way. the left lane is solid cars so you have to pass in the right. It was driving me crazy.

Hey jackass, I bought the car with a salvaged title for 15K, it is paid for. I get 22 mpg when I do the speed limit. Money is tight because I am between jobs.

Punch his lights out! Kick his face!

Or, lighten up a little. He's got a valid point. I definitely don't need to be driving a freakin' Suburban around all the time. Currently looking into crew cab diesels, or small station wagons. :D

I hear ya, my wife has always loved the Sequoia's, it fits all of us, and my old little volvo has to have the engine rebuilt.

Looking into getting a scion Xb, it will fit most of us when needed, or a toy matrix.

but driving in the HOV lane just to be in the HOV lane is just plain stupid. It's about as inconsiderate and rediculous of a premise as I've heard all day. It sounds like it wasn't even during a busy time of day so he didn't even need to be there.

I can understand people that have a need for a vehicle like that. But I'm a big fan of practicality. I try and drive vehicles that are as practical as possible for their intended use. Driving the occasional child or two around at 60 mph isn't practical for a 6000# v8 7 seat suv--even if it does defy all bounded science by achieving 22 mpg. Happy valley is just full of miracles isn't it!

If you have a commute, buy a commuter car. If you have to tow, buy a tow rig. If you have to fit lots of chill'ens, buy a big SUV or mini van. If want to look like an idiot, buy a sami. If you have no personality and want to score with stupid sorority chicks, buy a bullet bike. This isn't rocket science here.
