How LONG are you??

Your long arms?
I have pretty much commited myself to replacing the rear leaf springs on the toyota. Mocking up the rear links (in my mind) it looks like 27" to 30" is about what I am looking at for the lower links. Any more than that, it looks like they will become more of an anchor.
Is that long enough for a 112" wheelbase? When I say long enough, I mean: Will this set up outperform my current leaf spring set up?
Any info please.

So the 30" might be a tad short huh? So how often do they end up being ramps or anchors?
How often do you end up replacing them from trail damage?
I am planning on using some 2" .250 wall for the lower links, is this strong enough to handle ramp duty? Do you carry any extra links with you?

It really comes down to how you set the arms up and how they work with your specific vehicle. I would be more worried about length comparison of upper vs. lower arms. But even then, it depends on your application. :)

I believe mine are in the 36" range, at 103" wb. I use 2" .250 DOM and they are holding up great.

No extra links with me, mine are .401 wall lowers. I have a bent one on it right now. Everything will bend just deal with it. I like jame's and shawn's idea of having the same lowers and uppers so they only have to carry one spare etc. Just depends on how they did it i guess.

excuse my poser pic-_-

I totally agree with the ramp thing, I just use some rolling momentum and up we go! I'm around 48" upper and lower and 113wb.

Well I will dig up this thread to get some more info. I just got my suspension joints in. 2.5 johnny joints and I'm getting ready to do my links. I have noticed again that quite a few of you guys run the same link lengths on uppers and lowers. I thought that the uppers were suppose to to be about 70 percent the length as the lowers as a general idea. Something to do with how the rear ends pinion and how it travels when your suspension droops. Is there really any downside to having the same length upper and lower links?

Nope. That 70% (or 75%) number was thrown out there by someone in a magazine article, it certainly isn't gospel. Build it.

I think my rear uppers are 36", lowers 34" (my rear is not double triangulated, only single) and front lowers are 40" on 100" WB. The lowers are 2" .25" wall and uppers are 1.75" .120" wall. All of the joints are 2.5" johnny joints.

My rear needs to be longer, so I'll probably add (make new arms) about 2" to the uppers/lowers and move the as$ end out more.

Do I hit them on rocks? Not very much. I've been on a hand full of pretty extreme runs and I barely show signs of the paint being scratched on the rear arms, but not even touched on the fronts. My old suspension I hit them all the time. My rear lowers are higher than before - mounted above the axle center line and with 39 instead of 35" tires. The old suspension I bent the lowers a lot. Probably replaced them 6? times under warranty (RE rules!). The last set I had on there for a little while were the latest updates with cromo spuds and those didn't bend on me.

As for the length of the arms, I don't think it matters as much as their geometry to the related mounts and ground.
