So my little boy, lost the one key i had for my 83 cj-7 and i ordered a whole new ignition switch so the one i ordered just came in. So i took the stering wheel off but now there is a kind of triangle type thing (it looks like the flux copacitor off the movie Back to the future) except smaller and made out of aluminum any way it has a hole with a clear tube with a metel pin sticking thru it that looks like its supposed to be pushed dow then the flux copcitor will turn, well the metal pin pushed down far enough to turn it but the clear tube wont move, any ideas? i will be out in the garage tryin to figure this out so if anyone has an answer can u please call me at 801-916-5000 my name is bill and thank you

Take a picture. You appear to be describing the turn signal cancelling cam, but I'm not too sure.

Screw it, I'll call. I'm feeling generous today.

alright thank you tacoma, ive gat all the complicated stuff out but now the black cover just spins and cant get the cover off because the wires to the turn signal thing stops it from comming any further, the ignition is firm in place any help.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
In the mean time, there is usually 3 or 4 screws that hold the turn signal switch in place. Some times you have to move the lever in order to get at them all. This is the easy part though. In order to swap out the key switch, you need the key. You turn it to the on position and that drops the hold pin down letting you slide the switch out. I have done it in the past, without the key though, much harder. You need to take a puch and beat the pin in, without damaging the wall around the pin. Good luck, have fun, yada yada yada.

Thank you for our help (and time) Tacoma, well we drilled out the whole ignition thing but still wouldent come out, so we ended up breaking the housing off the stering column, does anyone have an extra stering column for sale, Ive really got to get this this running.

I know that there are lots of aftermarket places, maybe like quadratec. I probabaly just would have had a locksmith cut another key for 50 bucks

I feel your pain. I have changed ignitions 3 or 4 times- once in below 0 weather. On the plus side, my knuckles didn't start bleeding until I was done and warmed up for 20 minutes...
I just used a GM cylinder. Bolts right in.

He'll need a whole column-- the gear that the cylinder engages got uhmmmmmm roont. :D

It is a LOT easier to change lock cylinders when you have the key. And pre-81 Jeeps. :D

I had nothing to do with what The Hulk over there did to that poor column! LOL

As he put it very well-- "Learning is expensive sometimes".
