I found the nasty noise in my son's comanche

Well my son's comanche started making a bad grinding/scraping sound when we would go through gutters or other bumps at high speed. It sounded like tires rubbing on the fenders but I couldn't find any spot that showed rubbing. So I started looking at other areas that could make nasty noises. I found that the front driveline yoke was hitting the exhaust downpipe and that the fan was hitting the air shroud. I wondered how they could be hitting since there is plenty of clearance. What I found was that the motor mount rubber which looks good on the surface has seperated from the round steel center bushing that the main bolt goes through. This is allowing the motor to slide forward when going through a bump causing things to grind into each other. I know what I'll be doing tomorrow night after work.....

if the motor mounts is bad when the drive line hits the down pipe it rotates the the engine to hit the fan shroud. i would do motors mounts

My guess is that you're going to be SUPERVISING him on how to replace it.

Well he is back east on a mission so that may be a bit tough. My wife drives it all over so maybe I should have her fix it ;) I have plenty of stock motor mounts in the parts pile but wish I had some of the heavy duty offroad mounts to put in it.

Thats a good reason for you to fix it, mission. an yes I would get the HD mounts you've heard about,( women drivers).

Well I swapped out the bad mounts, would have been done a lot sooner but the right side mount was a pain. I couldn't get the mount out because the bushing bolt hits the oil filter housing so I had to take the mount bracket off the block. Jeep uses an "expletive deleted" torx bolt on one of the bolts and of course it stripped out. Ended up having to grind the head off. The mounts were really bad as you can see in the picture.

I had a similar problem in my chevy. Only that my harmonic balancer was rubbing on the crossmember. I ended up replacing the cross member and the balancer as well as the motor mounts. What a pain.
