So I went and weighed everything tonight.

I am absolutly horrible with math so let me know if I am figuring this out wrong.

First weigh... Entire load, Truck, Scout, tent trailer, trailer

front axle of truck 4020

rear axle of truck 5320

trailer axles 11680

Total gross weight 21020

Second weigh.....Truck only

front axle 4520

rear axle 3480

Total gross weight 8000

SOOO........

take 8000 from 21020 gives you 13020 which is what the trailer weighs without the truck. So 10% of that weight will be 1302 lbs. So thats what I need for tongue weight at least.

The drive axle on the truck had 3480 lbs without the trailer and 5320 with the trailer which is a difference of 1840 lbs.

So my brain tells me when the trailer is loaded on the truck it has 1840 lbs of tongue weight which is well over my 10% number so I should be good right?

I decided to hop on the freeway on the way home. It pulled fine at 65 mph. No sway! Any faster than that and my EGT were to hot so it looks like 65 it will be which is fine by me. A couple of big bumps I could see the trailer bobble a little but I couldnt feel it in the truck.

Oh and BTW....I installed a set of air bags and have 45lbs in them. The truck is squatted about 1 inch or so. I can put more air in if needs be but I think its good.

Let me know if Im way off base figuring those numbers. Like I said Im horrible at math. I forgot to snap a pic before the sun went down so this is all you get :greg:

How hot were the egts? With the 6spd and 3.55s your lugging a little at 65, your egt will be better at 70 but that is to fast for that gvw imo. Your egt should have never been over 1250 -1300 which is fine for the cummins, I was told by Rich at Gillett diesel you can run the cummins all day to 1400 but I have read that 1250 - 1300 is better. That is why I wanted a gear splitter, I like 65ish with a load but the truck is geared for 70+.
That is a big load, be safe and have fun.

hmm.. The Egt was about 12 to 1250. It hit 1300 when I tried to go 70. I thought 1300 was meltdown.

I have a LONG drive to get used to it and to figure out where it wants to be.

Your math is a bit off. You need to take the trailer weight-the weight of the trailer axles when hooked up to get the tongue weight.

13020-11680=1340

So the tongue weight is 1340 lbs. Barely 10%. The other 500 lbs came from the front axle. If it tows fine then I wouldn't worry about it but just know that you are close.

Ches, you are going to be fine with those numbers. I would not hesitate at all to take that load to California and back. It also looks like you moved the tent trailer further forward on the trailer and that allowed you to move the Scout further onto the trailer as well. Your load looks good. Good luck to you and Corey.

Well....we got back from Cali last night. Everything went perfect! The truck towed like a dream. I cruised about 65 the whole way there. On the way home after hitting Nevada I bumped up to 70 and it was solid as could be. Funny thing is I got better mileage at 70 than I did at 65???

It is kind of a pain to chain down the Scout with this setup but doable. I think I will have this setup for a long time!

Me and Aaron both got around 12 going to moab on easter and we were doing 75 anytime someone was not in front of us. My jeep and trailer is some what lighter than yours.

Towing the Jeep at about 72-75 mph (right around 2100 rpm), I get about 11-12. I'm sure my trailer weighs 3500 lbs or more and I know my Jeep weighs 4480 lbs. I believe if I could stand to tow about 65 (1950-2000 RPM), I'd get a mpg or two better. I get a little worse towing our camp trailer that's lighter, but has WAY more wind resistance.

I need new tires. I've been seriously considering moving to a 315 but enjoy the 285s pulling power. The 315 would bump my RPMs down at a given speed, but I'm not sure where I fall on that. Might be worth an experiment. Anyone have some 17" Powerjoke wheels?

ya I was happy getting 10ish while pulling a 13,000+ lb. trailer. The Scout isnt exactly aerodynamic either

Is that with the dually (Dodge) or with the Powerjoke.
