It fills a completely different market than just about anything out there.
Exactly. It's marketed towards Apple fans who won't ask questions like "why would I actually need this", with the natural follow up "are there other options available that would also meet my specific needs more effectively or less expensively". It fills different needs for different people, so regardless of whether Jobs tells you it's not designed to compete with netbooks, tablets, or Kindle's, doesn't mean it isn't--it very much is. People will buy it to fill a particular need and those people have every right to compare the other options that can also fill that particular person's particular need just as, if not more, effectively.
Just because people ask those questions doesn't mean they automatically hate Apple, it just means they are starting down the path that ultimately leads to Apple hate.
