Ok let me say first that I do not agree with the manner that this person presents his view points (too many personal attacks) BUT I do think that this idea is very interesting.

Avoiding personal attacks on the author,,, what do you think about the idea?

"TOLL BOOTHS FOR NEXT EASTER?

Dear Editor,

I, along with many other locals, are annoyed about the destructive nature of Moab’s infamous "Easter Jeep Safari." These jeepers come to Moab for one week and rip it to pieces like my dog and a stuffed animal. I’m sick of going out after Jeep safari and finding trash strewn across the desert for months after. If they cannot pick up their mess, they shouldn’t come to our mecca of beauty to play. I value the beauty of the canyon country, and I don’t want it to be destroyed. I want my children to be able to enjoy it as much as I have.

I know that the jeepers are a major factor in keeping this town alive, and I know that Moab is just a place of play for all the tourists that come here. But for me it’s more than that; it’s my home. It may not always be, but for now it is and I’m going to protect it.

This is why I suggest that for that one week of absolute havoc and mayhem, we set up toll booths to get within the Moab City limits. I don’t think the jeepers will mind an extra ten dollars, for a week of fun, happiness, and extreme jeeping, and carnage. This money can go to rehabilitate the land they destroy, help fund public schools, and buy all of you alcohol loving adults a drink after the stressful week from hell and all the hard working kids a root beer after having to put up with all the stupid tourists asking for shirt after shirt at the T-Shirt Shop.

I know it’s asking a lot but I think a lot of people will agree with me that this is a good idea. I think that if they don’t have the manners to pack out what they packed in, they should either have to give us money every time they come to town or have to sit through a two hour, extremely boring movie, where we will try to cram some moral decency into their little heads.

Sincerely.

Sell the T shirts for twice as much.

Nah, you're right. Good point. I believe it's just a matter of time. Still can't bite the hand that feeds.

Many Moab locals that I've talked to either love it or hate it there. Sharing is hard.

Ok, why do you think it is a bad idea. (serious question)

I just dont think that personally attacking the author accomplishes anything, we dont need to drop to that level.

I was more interested in hearing some other 4wheelers thought on the idea of charging for access to EJS for all and not just for those that go on the RR4W trail rides

Read what you posted again. A toll for everyone to drive into Moab? I already paid my share in taxes (federal, state, and local salestax in the town of Moab) I am entitled to drive on those roads as is everyone else. I do not owe the alcohol loving adults of Moab a drink or the hard working kids of Moab a root beer. The bigest issue I have with the IDIOT is that I do not destroy anything, do not leave a mess or even ever make one, and the only thing I want to rip to shreads is him.

Disagree, and I'll keep my opinions on the letter to myself.

I also have never been, nor do I ever even intend on attending a ESJ. For one reason only, too many people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Complicated though, This guy may drive some Ford Fiesta. But to charge any off road vehicle who passes through town is difficult. Not all trails are in town. What about the rides north of Moab? Buckhorn Wash for example. Or south on the way to BFE? Would there be some goon selling passes in some shack. Or much worse some type of law enforcement? This is targeting only those who are willing to pay if it's an on-your-honor basis. Those who litter won't drop off a donation! Moab is too large to try to control this type of strategy. Tourists are who have built that town. Making them feel unwelcome is the best way to keep their money in some other towns pockets. Do I have to leave the jeep at home on bike trips so I dont get hassled by the entrance fee cops?

I agree with what you are saying,, but I think that many would agree that EJS does produce a large amount of trash on the trails. Something needs to be done,,, this was just an idea

I dont agree either. Instead of a toll booth, why dont they start enforcing the law? Why dont they start increasing fines for littering? Make the police do their job. Its just spreading the old saying "one person ruins it for everyone" Why tax everybody, even people who don't trash the place, but instead have good clean fun and bring in income to the town. If they wanted to take action, increase police during jeep safari, increase littering tickets to the fools who leave the trash, and leave the good hearted people alone.
But thats just my 2 cents

I think RR4W does a good job of "greasing the wheels" of Moab and makes a contribution to EVERY resident of Moab regardless of whether or not they make it off road.

For reference, here is RR4W's payment schedule each year...
Grand C. Search & Rescue - $1500
Grand C. Sherrifs Office - $1500
San Jaun C. S&R - $1000
Moab PD - $1500
Moab CofC - $ 1500
Seekhaven - $500
Arches New Hope Center - $500
Moab Humane Soc. - $500
Red Rock Motocross Club - $500
Moab Arts Council - $500
Moab Rotary Club - $1000
Allen Mem. Hospital - $2000
Red Rock Elem. PTA - $1000

Now this of course is a direct result of "Easter Jeep Safari" which is much, much smaller than "Easter Jeep Week" which of course is the non-paying side of things. We don't need to go into the whole argument for or against either... I just wanted to illustrate what RR4W's are doing with a huge chunk of their registration right off the get go... And this dollar value does NOT include the big chunk of money they pay the BLM for permits each year... money that is used by the BLM to keep those trails legit (EIS studies, etc) for the rest of us the other 355 days a year ;)

Hmmm, thats a loaded answer...

With thousands of miles of trails and roads in the greater Moab area, it would take a police force the size of Moabs entire population to even try and enforce all of the laws on public lands. The BLM & Police will be the first to tell you they need more money for enforcement, but in the meantime we need to be self-policing. Greenie groups love to advocate for new OHV laws, meanwhile the BLM, FS et all don't have the resources to enforce the current ones.

I would NOT agree with that. While "Easter Jeep Week" may produce some ill effects on the land, I personally beleive that "Easter Jeep Safari" ie: the actual RR4W event has nothing but positive effects on the land... YEAR ROUND.

They can focus in areas of gatherings (ie:potatosalad hill etc) And have a significant result on the area and maybe it would make some people think twice about littering other places.... its better than taxing everyone

he does have a point.

A slight one I suppose ;)

I guess I just envision police having MUCH worse things to deal with at places like Potato Salad than littering, and with giant crowds it would be pretty difficult (and potentially unsafe) for them to even try to enforce... seems DUI, public intox, fighting and crowd safety might outrank the littering when faced with the limited resources the area has.

I am a long time advocate of making Potato Salad a much bigger spectacle, mabey live music? It keeps people off the trails where they don't always belong ;) At least there is only one giant spot to clean up after jeep week rather than a million isolated ones ;)

Maybe they should deputize some of the people who feel strongly (the guy/girl who came up wit the toll idea) and let them hand out littering tickets

All people have to do is speak up, If you see someone throw trash on the ground say something to them. If they get offended thats their problem they will think twice next time I'm sure. I know we always pick garbage on the trail when we go out.
