Jeep Jeep upcoming Straight Six: Hurricane

I actually know absolutely nothing about the 5.2.

The CPS on my '06 is super, super easy to get to though. I haven't had to replace it but I've had to unplug it. And I didn't find the old position all that difficult to deal with, using a bunch of extensions from underneath. But mine, it's just up from the starter. Plain sight, two handed access.

Yes but all of those things can also be said about a lighter, more powerful, more readily available 5.2/318 V8.

Comparing similarly built 4.0 and 5.2 zjs is very eye opening. The 5.2 has more power (low end and high end), 25% better mileage, easier to work on (that cps on the 4.0 can **** right off), cheap parts, and runs forever. The knock on the 5.2 is it's not a sexy V8. It's no ls or hemi or 5.9. It's just old reliable with just nough power.
A 5.2 falls into my category of older is better. Of course the 4.0 is a dog by comparison. There’s no point in comparing them IMO

Edit: and the 5.2 vs the 4.7 is another prime example

Effing shows offs like Hickey that get around all the baloney. LS power, longevity, support, yeah... Not for poors like me that don't have the balls to try and do it myself though.

I want a ride in it. Hell, I want to drive it with permission to stomp it.

I didn’t say it would be soon, but soon after the 3.6 yeets.

The only problem with the old 4.0 i6 is that it's absolutely ****ing terrible at everything. Gutless, heavy, leaky, unreliable.

Beyond that, it's great.

Unreliable? Not in literally anyone's experience with them. they were work horses as long as you fixed the TPS and kept up on t-stats and water pumps. Which are super easy to do.

Gutless? From an HP standpoint , sure. From a torque standpoint? absolutely not.

Heavy sure.

Leeaky? Evertying on my TJ leaked, so its hard to pin point the source.

Yes... Reliable as long as you like working on it all the time. Got it ;) fwiw, I beat on my 5.2s and the only thing I can recall having issues with was the fuel pump on the buggy... Which was an aftermarket external Ford unit used after I cut the back off the jeep. The laundry list of crap I was constantly replacing on my 4.0 zj is long and that stupid jeep left me stranded time after time. Good riddance. Small sample size, but....

... It's an intentionally hot take. I know lots of people have had good experiences. Power wise, I'm sure off road and up to a blistering 55 mph, the mighty 4.0 does fine in a wrangler or xj. My experience was with and around heavier grand Cherokees where they were fairly universally loathed for being underpowered and hard to work on (mostly from being wedged into the engine bay that was engineered to hold the smaller block of the V8 I assume). The reliability wasn't great either, which I assume was because they were constantly being run hard trying to move around the bigger vehicle.

Funny talking about the new Hurricane and 2 old workhorse engines take over the thread
I enjoyed the 5.2 in my ZJ for a couple decades. Water pumps every 70K was the most common issue. I did have a CPS leave the chat and that is the worst CPS there is to replace. 3 4.0's in the family, 2 mine and 1 my Sons ranging from 148K (I would argue the hours are that of a much higher mileage engine) to 205K non of them leak and are guaranteed to start and take you anywhere you want go. maybe not fast but...
