Ozzy, once I figure out our budget, I'll let you know. We'll be hiring for a position we're calling Webdesk. It'd be a great stepping stone or foot in the door to be able to get your hands on a little bit of everything and figure out what exact path you want to take in IT. You'd be reporting to myself or my peer while we build this team with the eventual opportunity to either move on to a more senior position on my team (I run the website systems team), move to the Neteng team, the Dba team, the SAN team, or to the Windows team. Or even in to running the Webdesk team if your desired career path is managemt. There's tons of career growth potential and it's a really fun place to work. I'll let you know when we post the position.

Caleb, thank you very much for considering me. As I mentioned, I really do like the job I'm at and coming to this point has been a difficult decision but I have to do what is best for my family. I have really struggled with the feeling that I need to look for more opportunities to learn and grow since I have learned all I can learn where I am at. I'll shoot you a PM with a few questions I have and again, appreciate the heads up.

Zombie, honestly not much but I appreciate you asking. In case anyone else is wondering, most of my experience thus far has been desktop and system support for end users. I maintain the technology at the school level and troubleshoot, diagnose and repair hardware that is malfunctioning. I manage a high school, the schools at the prison, train new hires, teach end users, cover tech support for the board of directors and their meetings, and in general help out where I can.

A typical high school will have 500-700 devices, 30+ xirrus arrays, 20+ gig switches connected via fiber, and a server with DC and imaging VM's. I've become as valuable as I'm going to get where I'm at and I don't foresee a sys admin position being available here any time soon. I work with the systems and network engineers on a daily basis and try to pickup what I can from those interactions but unfortunately I don't have many opportunities to cross train with the other teams.

On my own time I build computers and do consumer and small business support as side work and when I can find the time tinker and learn what I can at home. I've been building computers, tinkering and learning on my own for the past five years or so but only have three and a half years of on the job experience starting with help desk and then moving to the field tech team. I'm still pretty green but willing and anxious to learn and expand my horizons.
