My son started on an xr 80 from 11-13yrs old. It's pretty dang small now so I need to find an upgrade. Any thoughts for him on his next bike? I don't think the 100 would last him long. Sorry for the continued hijack.

How tall is he? Assuming he likes the power of the XR 80 and he does trail riding (not racint), I'd recommend:

Yamaha TTR-125L (or a 230 if he's big)
Honda CRF 150F (or a 230 if he's big)

i own a ttr 125 and my brother has the crf 150.
the ttr is a chick bike low end grunt not a lot of top end, perfect for that teen beginner. look at the L model, it has the bigger tires.

the 150 on the other hand has a lot of power, but it is smooth and very controllable.

if your kid is going to develop great skills and eventually be into a yz250 then go with the Honda, it will roll them right into it

if like my girls, will never aspire to ride a yz 250 then the ttr is the way to go.

The only bad thing about a CRF150 "F" is it is heavy. I think 20-25lbs heavier than the TTR. It is a better constructed bike and you can see it in the components. I am actually selling my sons's CRF150F and replacing it with a CRF150R Expert. I will put a Rekluse in it for him. Gone will be the e-start but it is nearly 50lbs lighter than the 150F. I bought two of these 150F's late last fall and sold one of them already. They both had headlights, not real bright but doable at night to get off the trail.

Derek (Tonkaman) came up and had his girlfriend sit on this 150F and my neighbor's TTR125L and the F is a heavier, stouter bike. Derek can chime in if he wants.

Its hard to say about the YZ80 or 85. I grew up riding them as a 12 yr old kid. In fact I had a YZ80 and a RM80. Liked my YZ better at the time. It all depends on where you ride as to what I would get them. My 12 yr old and I like to do single and double track rides. Sand is hard for kids because of the smaller tires.

Harrison rode the Slick Rock Trail, Dead Cow Tube and the Tubes with the big boys a week ago. The sand killed him and really slowed him down. There were a few places that I rode his bike for him over or up an obstacle but all in all, he handled it. I never push him past his comfort level but at the same time I MAKE him ride the spots I know he can handle. It doesnt get any better than when your son or daughter can ride with you. My older son or daughter would have ridden the trails just fine.

would you say that going from the 150f to the 150R expert would be a logical move and then to a 250 as they get bigger and have more skill?

Mesha, I am just a few blocks away and have a PW80 you are more than welcome to test him on. I also have a KTM 65 that my 10 year old just moved up to so you can see the difference. I would really shy away from it for a beginner. He has 3 years on the PW and the 65 is still a little intimidating for him.

My experience is stay away from the KTM 50s. The ones I have owned and been around are way more maintenance than a full size 450. I also had a KX 65 that I would have lit on fire and smiled whiled it burned but that's just me. My two oldest started on PW80's and moved up to a KLX110. One of them moved right to a YZ80 and the other moved up to the KX 65 then a YZ 85.

My wife and daughter both ride the PW and love it.

Thanks both of you. This gets me on the right track. He's not very tall for his age. (in fact he's pretty short)

How much for the CRF?

We only ride two track and single track trails right now, but I used to love the St. Anthony Sand Dunes in College. We are only 40 minutes away but that won't be in the cards for a few years at least.

Davy, you know where this is going to lead, right?

Once big D gets his own dirt bike, you're going to need one to ride along with him. Which means you're going to have to join us for our weekly AF Canyon ride. Which means your quality of life will just about double.

Do you have a bike to ride? Do you have any dirt biking experience? I could see you on a XR250 or XR400 for your first year.

I have wanted a bike for a long time anyway. Not much experience. No real "trail" experience.

I will end up with a bike one way or another. I think riding around with my son would be so much fun.

I would love to come check out the 80. I have no idea about these little bikes and could use the info. Thanks for the offer!

I am concerned the pw80 will be too much for him. He isn't even that good at riding a bicycle :).

You're all WEAK SAUCE!
Parker wheelied out of town on a crf 50 which was a little scary, but the guy who owned said the pw50 was a perfect first bike. I've ridden a crf 50 with the 80cc kit and it was way too much for Little D. He may grow out of a pw50 quickly, but I think it's the best starter. IT's fully automatic as well. A lot of these little bikes are clutchless 3 speeds or similar.
