Land slide at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon mine

True that. I'm curious to compare that to the Thistle landslide. This looks mucho bigger?

I was thinking about this earlier. I wonder. That Thistle slide was a bigun. I would bet this is bigger though. My neighbor works out there and he said that was about 3000 ft in elevation. He said they were expecting something like 100 million tons to slide and this far exceeded that. Apparently 100 million tons takes them about 8 months to move so...This will take awhile to clean up.

What the news said is a normal shift is 1/20" per day, the last couple days it has been shifting 1-2" per day and yesterday it shifted 8" so they knew it would happen any day. They did say they didn't know the magnitude as well. Since the news never lies or exaggerates, I'll believe them

The news is a reliable source:rofl: My brother could be way off also, that's just what the story was going around out there.

Heard on the new that the amount of earth that moved was more then the amount they dug out to make the Panama canal. That is alot of dirt.

I know a guy that works there. The shop that was basically split in half was the old shop. They had everything out of it. The land has been moving about 3 mm a day for several years and it started moving more the last few weeks so they began to move stuff out. There was some equipment in the bottom. Not lost in the slide, just marooned, no way to get it out right now. They will get it out but it may be a while. That would have been something to see happen live

saw some pictures on ksl with more of a close up of the trucks at the bottom, like already stated, those trucks look small, would be interesting to see that in person.

Oh man, I was wishing the same thing. Could you imagine how amazing that would have been?

There is video of it but I heard it wasn't that good cus it started getting dark. I haven't seen it yet.
I don't know what you mean by half size haul truck because those trucks are the biggest ones we have up here. The ones in the pics are komatsu 930e-4se. They haul over 300 tons a load and cost about 4.5 million. Pretty big, komatsu and cat each build one that is one size bigger but they are not as popular.

So that building that is hanging off the edge is the truck shop, or was the truck shop. We were still working out of it 2 days before the slide. A new shop has been built and we were supposed to move in in June. A few weeks ago they told us we needed to start moving now because the slide was picking up. We did get everything out before the slide including our tools, which is good cuz the room that we kept all our tool boxes in was at the end of the shop that fell off! Haha.

saw a news report that said this is going to take between 1-1.5 yrs to clean up... where do they start? at the top and work down? or at the bottom and work up?

My thought is they start at the top, it would keep additional material from sliding on them. The big issue I see is if the loaders are at the bottom how do you get them out so you can start filling trucks. (or buy additional?)

Well the funny thing about that is, well I guess not really funny cuz it sucks, but they wanted to dig from the top and the bottom. So they can get it cleaned up faster. Originally they slide they projected would take 6 months to clean up. They planed on it taking out the top of the main haul road. The problem with this is there is only one haul road that goes down in the pit, big enough to run the haul trucks on. Also the crusher, where they dump the ore and send it down the line to make money, is on the bottom part of the slide on the haul road. So if they slide went they would not be able to get trucks to the crusher for 6 months, there for not make any money for 6 months. About a week to 10 days before the slide they got the bright idea to stage a bunch of equipment and supplys at the bottom of the pit. That way when the slide went and closed off the top part of the haul road they could still run some of the trucks on the bottom to dig it out and the rest of the trucks in the bottom in an ore pocket to the crusher, thus still makeing some money. So not only did they stage 35 haul trucks down there at 4.5 million each, they also took tons of big spare parts to maintain the trucks. Stuff they would not be able to get down there w the road blocked off. Like 100 haul truck tires at $70,000 each, 2 haul truck engines at $300,000 - $500,000 each, final drives, corner groups, wheel motors, power alternator's ect. That's not to mention all the other equipment down there. 3 shovles to load the haul trucks @ 10 - 15 million each, 3 drills to prep the ground for the shovles @ 7 million each.
Well the slide was way bigger than anyone thought and now all that equipment and supplys are covered in dirt! Probably ruined. They have not let anyone down yet, but from what they can see from the top, there might be 10-15 haul trucks that are run able down there.

Pretty crazy deal, I'm just glad that they have the monitoring equipment and safety mentality they due. Or this would have been a more tragic event, probably killing a lot of people. I mean I could have been at the bottom under all that dirt if not for the importance of safety to kennecott!

Ouch, thats a lot of cash sitting at the bottom of the pit, not to mention the money lost on down time

The good news is they let us up to work last night. I helped cummins change a set (18) of injectors on a haul truck (warrenty). We are not allowed in the shop yet so we changed them out in the field. They are just running a portion of the trucks up top, but that's one step closer to producing copper safely!

Are you working for Komatsu or Kennecott?
