large SUV- which is best?

Looked at reviews over the past years for 4wheeler magazine. For off-road they love the Z71 Tahoe, don't care for the Sequia and don't like at all the Armada.

With all that have learned thus far, looks like the suburban has the most advantages, with the only real down side being its size- but that is also a plus for hauling people, pets and gear.

which suburban are you thinking of?

1500 5.7
2500 5.7
2500 7.4
1500 5.3
2500 6.0
2500 8.1

X vs burb was a tough decision for me. Sounds like you are doing your homework for what will work for you.

Having mainly pulled a 6000lb jeep-on-trailer or a 6000lb travel trailer with a '95 1/2ton chev pickup, '81 1/2ton burb, '99 3/4 ton burb and '02 psdX, the corrected X is hands down the best...and I'd hate to go back to the others. I say goodbye to my '99 burb this week. I'll hate to see it go.

That I don't know yet. The half tons are listed as having significantly higher GC, but obviously the 2500 have the edge in towing- which is a big factor in the purchase anyway.

In all honesty, it might come down to what I can find the best deal on when I am ready to buy.

Any suggestions on which engine I should try for?

With gas prices as they are, I'd shoot for an older half ton with the 350. I know a guy who's got over 250,000 miles on his, and it stills runs strong. Granted he doesn't tow anything...but they're good rigs. The main reason I suggest it though is that he gets 20 mpg on the highway when not towing. With the 35 gallon tank, that's a 700 mile cruising range. That's Moab and back with fuel to spare. It wouldn't be the best choice if you're going to tow heavy loads...but for ~5,000 lbs, it would be fine. The only potential downside that I see to the old 5.7 'Burbs is that the newest one you'll be able to find will be 6 years old. I don't have any experience with the 5.3 'Burb, but again, for relatively light trailering loads, I would think it'd be fine, and it should get decent mileage when not towing. If you plan on towing more often, or heavier loads, I'd go for the 6.0. It has the power, the heavier duty trans, axles, etc, and the leaf spring rear end (vs the 5 link coil on the 5.3 1/2 ton), but it's still a small enough engine that you should be able to get decent enough gas mileage. The 7.4 and 8.1 are awesome engines, but they suck fuel like a Hoover sucks dirt, which doesn't cut it when you're paying 3 dollars a gallon.

I don't like towing anything over 5000 lbs with a 1/2 ton. (even if it's rated for 8800 lbs)

If it is honestly under 5000 lbs, the 1/2ton 1500 w/ 5.3 will be a great value and will get decent mileage and they are plentiful. If it's over 5000 lbs, and you don't have to have the biggest and baddest, the 6.0 in the 2500 will do a hell of a job, and get good mileage when not towing. I have a friend who had one and he really liked it (he had a dmax too, but also used the burb until he sold it). You can get the 6.0 from 2000 on, whereas the 8.1 started in '01.

You can search on autotrader, and look for the U in the vin. I'll get an example later and edit it in to this post. There were quite a few when I was looking, up until June when I bought my Excursion.

On the Excursion: Yes it sucked to have to spend a few more hundred dollars on springs, sway bars and bags...but it's odd for this crew to complain about that since we rarely keep a vehicle stock for more than 15 minutes after we buy it. Now that it's got the Vcode springs, sway bar and airbags, it is the most kickass tow rig I've had yet, and it's not chipped or piped or anything.

As an Armada owner, I can say I made the right choice for me. We absolutely love our Armada. 305 Horse, 385 Ftpds Torque, and a 9100 pnd towing capacity. Seats 8.

Test drove a Seqouia first, it rode harder than a Tahoe. Didnt want a Tahoe cuz it seems everyone has one. My 2nd choice would be a TD Excursion. We got our '04 Armada, through Ken Garff, so we also have their 10 year 250,000 mile engine warranty on top of the standard Nissan warranty. Nissan has been great about fixing any bugs or problems that we have had. Unlike alot of the horror stories you hear about from other vehicle manufacturers. we have had it a little ove a year now and have put close to 30,000 miles on it.

Man I live that truck. Nissan is supposed to be bringing the Diesel over to put in the Titan in the next couple of years. That is the Pickup I will buy next.

A little off the subject...would you tow the max 9100 lbs? or asked another way, how do you think it would do actually towing the max? Is that the max with 8 passengers or without? If not 9100, what would you say it can safely tow?

I know with the X, stock, no way in hell I would tow the max. Corrected, no problemo. Towed the max with the burb once...no problemo, other than going a little slower. However, I bought both vehicles with the understanding that I'd normally tow at about 60-70% of max, ie, I wanted a vehicle that had about 50% more capacity than what I was actually towing. This is typical for most seasoned RVers, who size their trailers for around 70% of max for their tow rig.

The Armada looks nice. My wife wanted me to look at them. The guy I bought my X from had bought an Armada...and had already had a lot of problems with it. Though unusual for a Nissan, this is apparently typical for the first year or two of the Armada, at least for the problems he was having (don't recall what they were.) Hope yours is different, though you've got the warranty to cover it.

I talked to one of the salesmen at Young Chev and he said they are hoping that late in 2006 the Suburban will have the Duramax in it! But it is still IFS...
I just wish Dodge would put out something a little bigger than the Durango with a solid axle front and the Cummings in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The '07 Chevy HD trucks and the 3/4 ton Suburbans will be straight front axle

Source?

(believe it when I see it at the stealership)

(that'd be too cool, next you're gonna tell me the burb gets the full zoot Dmax)

I am trying to find a link- there is a GM engineering blog that the engineers have said it is a done deal for '07. When I find the link I will post it. I do agree with the see it at the dealership comment though.
