Les Schwab on Redwood blows

Recently I had some OEM wheels powder coated (props to Extreme Powder Coating up in NSL - awesome work). A friend had the same thing done to his BMW wheels and recommended Les Schwab for the installation as they had a "no touch" wheel machine that would protect the powder coating. I should note he went to the one in Holliday.

I took my 4 bare rims and 4 BFG ATs I purchased from Discount Tire online to the Les Schwab on Redwood and 21st South. I left them at noon and told them I'd be back after work to pick them up.

I got back to the store at 430p, the tires were done. I had them take off the stock OEM wheels/MTRs and put on the powder coated rims and BFG ATs. One of the guys asked me if I'd purchased the tires at Les Schwab and I made my first mistake. I told them I'd gotten them during a special through Discount Online.

A few minutes later they were done and the installer called me up to the counter. He showed me the invoice - $144. No kidding. I was floored. I asked them how the hell they'd come up with that amount and he spelled it out on the invoice:

Mounting - $12/tire
Balancing 19.5" rim or 36" tire - $18/tire
Valve stems - $6 ea.
Swap tires - $6 ea.

I pointed out that the wheels were 16" and the tires were 35". They said that charge also applied for "special" rims and since mine were powder coated, they qualified. I had to get somewhere so I paid the bill and figured I'd take it up with a manager later.

I called the store an hour later and talked with a manager. He looked at the bill and thought it "might be a little high". He babbled about adjustments and how he'd only charge me for "commercial mounting" and came up with a new figure - $106. I told him ANYWHERE in the valley charged $10-$15 per tire for the SAME thing. He said that "by Les Schwab's book" the charges were $144 and this was the best break he could give me. He credited my card the difference.

I called two other Les Schwab locations the next day, told them precisely what I wanted done, and was quoted $15 at one place and $18 at another - total per tire, including mounting, balancing, valve stem, and swap. I asked the first about the charge I had been hit with at the Redwood store. He said "man, if someone was really, really a thorn in my side and a pain, I MIGHT hit them with around $80, but over $100 is kind of ridiculous."

I then called the Redwood store and talked to the store manager, Steve. I told him what had happened and he couldn't have been more passive. he argued that what one store says and someone telling me they might deviate from standard charges was all wrong. He said that by his calculations, the charges should have been $132.

I've got a call into the regional manager. I had a used spare mounted to the 5th rim (also powder coated) at the Goodyear store on 400S. and West Temple today, $16 plus tax. My other mistake was not asking beforehand specifically how much they would charge me.

So, I would recommend avoiding the Les Schwab store on Redwood and 21st South. I won't be shopping at any of them. Besides - who the F wants "free beef" with tires?

That same Les Schwab charged me $26 for a flat repair...wasn't really flat but had a screw in it and they were the closest from work...They really screwed you. I was at the one on 5600 s. and 3200 w. this afternoon and they did an alignment for a fair price and pretty quick so I guess they aren't all bad.

The one on 54th quoted me $109 to mount and balance 4 tires. The rest of the conversation went something like this...

"WHA? Walmart charges $8.50 a tire."
One guy to the other "What do I tell him"
Other guy to me "Than go to Walmart."

They didnt even offer to work with me a little. I will NEVER go back there.

Hmm, that Les Schwab has always treated me very fairly. Infact when I called around to get my tires mounted and balanced (35s on 15" steel rims) Les Schwab was the cheapest, I did end up going to Big O in South Jordan because of convenience and they have always treated me very well in the past but Les Schwab was still a better price. We take all our company vehicles to that Les Schwab for all our tire needs.

I would never have anything done without getting a price first. If you didn't ask how much it was going to cost before you had them do it I don't really see how you can complain too much about the price they charged you. Sorry.:(

I have rearely been happy after visiting a Les Schwab, I steer clear of them as much as possible. I have good friends working for them and they are great guys, but don't have much leeway on stuff.

Just so the guys up north know.....the Schwab in Roy on main street is awesome! Go in and talk to Chris. You cant say that all the stores are bad because of one jerk. Thats like saying all 4-wheelers dont give a crap because I saw one littering and tearing up private property

It's called gouging and taking advantage of a customer. If my previous visits to other tire shops in years past throughout the valley have given me a range of $9 (Costco) to $15 (Discount) for m&b a tire, why would I except that this one shop would be any different? Since I wasn't asking for anything out of the ordinary, why would I have any expectation that their price would be out of the ordinary?

also id say to anyone interseted. stay clear of jiffy lubes i was feeling a little lazy a few oil changes back and they did the most crappiest job ever there was litterally a fourth a quart of oil on top of my valve covers and oil everywhere. they also filled it up about a half a quart to much. and they tried to claim it was fine and thats not enough to make a difference i think they saw my old truck and thought they could do a crappy job and get away with it. i was pissed they got oil in my distributer and yeah it was a mess. my belts still squeek. that was in Lindon on state. i could of probably had better service at wal mart. and it was $32! they also claimed they checked my diff. the dirt on my bolts was still crusted on go figure

I do think it's wise to ask a price beforehand. It obviously wasn't what you expected it to be.

every tire shop is different and independently owned, why would you expect one to charge the same as the next. Your assumption is your own fault, sucks but...:-\

I agree, within a range. You expect to pay about $2 bucks for a Big Mac at McDonalds. If you went to one and they hit you for $40 for the same Big Mac, I think you'd squawk about it. They're all independently owned.

well, when I went to Hawaii it was ~$5 for a Big Mac...that's life, I still ordered but I did get a price first :D

With your numbers, you should have been charged $200-$300 per tire for mount and balance (if $2 -> $40). Keep it in perspective, it's no ones fault but your own. It's not gouging, you have other options, you could have gone anywhere, you CHOOSE to to drop them off at Les Schwab and not get a price. Do you think they would have charged you less if you had gotten a price before hand??? I bet if you call them up today to get a price it'd be the same (or very similar to) as what you paid.

But it would say on the menu "big mac, only $40" and then you don't order it.

I've neve rused Les Schwab, but I've had awesome service from the 3 Big-O's I've used (45th and 9th, and 90th and 7th in particular). I brought them 2 tires on two rims and had them switch the tires accross, I went in and told them what I had done and she didn't even charge me. So I gave the guys that did it a 20 spot just for the gesture.

I've used Discount Tire before and had good success.

Ditto on the Tooele Les Schwab store. I've had them do tires, brakes, even an axle seal I didn't have time for. Always good to deal with and very reasonable prices. They even offered to order in tractor tires for my mog.
