Has anyone here setup a Ford Excursion for Backcountry travel? Been thinking of doing it with mine but I am a bit worried about the size and wieght of it.

Spent the last nine months working on this. It was an all stock Samurai when I picked it up, now it's a goofy snail-mobile pop top to take the wife and kid out to places I ride motos. We've been everywhere (twice) in Utah that we could go in our motorhome, so we sold it and downgraded (upgraded in my opinion) to a vehicle that can get us away from humanity, albeit at a very slow pace.

31" tires, Trail Gear 3" springs, 1" shackles, Sky OTS Stage 1, 4.16 gears, stock motor. Little bugger rallied up Little Cottonwood last night for it's first "photo shoot" at about 32mph for most of the way. Had to downshift to 2nd gear for about 1/4mile.

It's more or less done, but I still need to finish the pop top, add a sink, stove, water tank, water pump, etc.

It's maiden voyage will be a 10 day Utah loop this March. Going to drive it around all winter to work out the kinks. It will likely get a 1.6 FI next year.

As the cruiser will be finding a new home, we decided to get going on the rest of the 4Runner:

2004 4Runner. V8.

So far, I have done the following:

-OME Heavy/heavy lift
-Sliders
-IBS Dual Battery system
-ASFIR Skid plate
-One size larger tire
-ARB Air compressor

The idea is to maintain a relatively stock vehicle, without a lot of unnecessary 'fluff' to get in the way.

I have an ARB winch bumper in the garage that will go on one of these weekends we are home, as well as some auxiliary lights. A Warn M8000 will be added when the bumper is installed. The idea here isn't for 'wheeling' but to protect the vehicle during travel on backroads at night, and to provide a means for self-recovery when in a pinch- I often travel solo with just my family.

In the works:

ARB Air Locker

Aluminess rear bumper with the box

On to the photos:
Stock, other than the box:

My good friend has the exact same 4Runner, just without the V8....we put the same lifts on and helped each other out with them:

Yeah, I could stand there and pick your brain all night about this stuff, being as I'm a newb to it all.

I'd be up for a late October ride if you and Andre want to head south. I have a route from Green River to Fruita (loop) with a piece of it that I'm not sure if it goes or not. The rest is open desert single track and dirt roads.

Eventually I'll put my Alaskan camper on a trailer. These pics are good starting points.
