Let's talk Chicken.. The pets, not the food..

We (my wife) have been letting our broody hen sit on a pile of eggs. The wife said when she checked this morning we have 7 that are now moving. So we might have home grown chicks in a few weeks. I'm guessing 7 roosters.

That's our luck too. We had three broody Cochins this spring that hatched out about a dozen chicks between them. We have eight left and they're doing good. Useless little things, but the wife and my 13-year old love them.

I think I’m up to 35 hours now to build the stupid coop. That’s MY time, not including the time my wife, kids, or brother have spent helping… which is probably another 20ish combined.
Here is one of the very few times the kids were all being helpful at the same time. Usually one is trying to be helpful, and the other two are fighting..

To make myself feel a little better about my costs so far, I looked up Carolina Coops.

We had two chicks hatch Sunday. Hopefully they survive our killer cat for the next couple weeks.
We went out to check on them last night and I was again reminded of how much of our language comes from our agricultural past.
I couldn't find the chicks in the coup, looked under the momma hen and sure enough, "she had taken them under her wing". I get a kick out of how many sayings come from raising chickens.

About 50 hours in, my time. It’s just about done. I made a perfect coop door, but then nailed it to the frame 1/4 inch off of what I needed.. the boards all broke when I tried to take it apart. So other than a door, and a little paint finish, she’s done.

The shed has a ton of bugs under it, and it’s turned into a buffet line for the chicks.

The chickens have settled into a nice routine. Each morning they are all crammed around the main door to the run waiting to be let out. They run to the shady part of the lawn that is still wet from the night sprinklers and devour food for a bit.

I noticed a missing chicken a bit ago. The kids found it hiding in a neighbors yard. I could go back and see in the cameras that a hawk had been chasing it around for about 5 minutes. Poor chicken was terrified and all alone. No honor among chickens I guess. The rest just left her.

The chicken was able to squeeze through a tiny slat in the semi-privacy fencing. So I’ll have to solve that somehow.

How do you have hawks in the big city? Of yeah, you live on the country club.
We have never had any predator issues but we do have a heard of killers to protect the livestock.

Brian, chickens are stupid sometimes and smart sometimes, the other week a piece of styrofoam blew into the yard and they about devoured it before I could get it away from them... feathered idiots...
Then about 3 years ago a fat tabby decided to get into it with my little flock. They all spread their wings, circled up and took turns kicking the crap outta that cat. It still roams the neighborhood but never seen it in my yard since. 😂
