I'd like an auto-darkening unit. What do you have and what do you like and what's the best bang for the buck?

What do I need to watch for to make sure I don't get 'flash burn' if the batteries start dieing out (or will I know?)

I had a solar powered one and it worked great It just crapped out on me but it lasted 4 years. I dug out my old one and it sucks not being able to see to start you weld. I was just going to go get a new one from jake.

I have a Huntsman VXL 4x4 auto darken lens and have used it for about 4 years now. When I was looking it was about the best priced 4x4 lens. It has 4 sensors on it and can darken even if 3 of the 4 are covered, adjustable darkness, sensitivity and delay settings so it makes it really adjustable. I bought a cheap helmet with a solid lens in it then bought the Huntsman auto darken unit and if I remember right I was about in the $100-150 range... I've never had any problems with getting flash burn from the batteries not working, as soon as they start to get low there is a little light that flashes. I dont wait for them to stop working, I just change them as soon as the light first comes on. Come to think of it, I think I've only had to change the batteries maybe twice... I dont use it every day, but I do use it at work and at home so it gets its fair share of time on.

I have however forgot to turn the darkness back up after using the cutting torch, or just forgetting to turn it on and got little spots for a minute, but never flash burn from the batteries not working

There was a new lens I noticed in Prax-Air the last time i was in there that was a 4x4 lens that had a very nice large opening... probably about 3 1/4 x 4 (vs mine which is actually only 2 1/2 x 4) I didn't price it, but i think it would be pretty sweet to have the extra field of view when your welding in crazy positions.

Totally agree. Good is better than cheap. I've only got one set of eyes. There are lots of things I enjoy seeing. :D I'll spend a little, just wonder if there's something that is $80-100 that is as good as something that's $200 or so?

I like the fact it has several sensors. Mine only had one and if you’re welding and anything gets in the way it would not work. (Gets annoying when you’re working in a jungle gym)

Get the biggest lens you feel like paying for. I have a speedglas 9000X something or other. Wide field of view and completely adjustable shades. It's expensive, but it fully rocks. I've never changed the batteries. I've had it probably 3 or 4 years or so.

If I were you I would skip the HF ones. Go see Jake and get something name-brand. I can't see risking your eyes to save 50 bucks. I've heard some complaints that the HF lenses are inconsistent. Some areas are not as dark as others. You don't have to spend 300 bucks, but spend a little to get a nice one.

Jake set me up with mine. If you buck up to an auto, get a good one, you won't regret it....Kinda like your paint guns....

I'm not in a hurry, but am ready to get something that I'll not regret buying. The one I have works, but leaves a lot to be desired (as does my welding, honestly----big, hot and ugly seems to work fairly well, though)

your post has got me thinking, let me know when you buy and I'll do it at the same time.

Maybe a RME bulk buy? Tires, trailers, welding helmets? why not?

Let me know what you think...

That trailer I bought is NICE. VERY HAPPY with it. Well worth the drive to Salina.

I was in a bind to get a job done before a Moab trip and I had a gift certificate to Lowes and got one there. It has gone through a few jobs and I have liked it. Im not a pro but it seems to work pretty good. It was around $100. The bonus is that it has flames on it!!

I picked up a Lincoln-brand auto darkening hood from Home Depot, I think it was $120 or so. It's been great, huge viewing window for those hard to see spots.

I got a good deal at AirGas on a Miller Elite helmet last year, It's overkill for the amount of welding I do, but it sure is nice to be able to see what the hell I'm doing :)

x2 on Miller from airgas. it is great, i feel like i can see what i am doing all the time welding or not. the harbor freight is good to. you should get one of those anyways as a spare or one for others to use while they are helping. another comment is the miller feels much more comfortable as far as fit and weight.

The nicest one I've personally demo'd was a really nice, ultra light Speedglass. It was more than I could afford at the time but I loved that helmet. I personally will be doing one like Braden posted. I really like the Speedglass brand.

Personally, I tried a cheapo harbor freight one and by the time I was done welding (Aluminum) I felt like I hadn't hardly been wearing a helmet, my eyes were really bothering me...never touched it after that, my eyes are worth it.
