Looking at a toy hauler

So your going fifth wheel? Your truck will handle it, but your trans won't like it. I toasted mine last summer. My goose with the two trucks weighs close to what your talking. I went with a John Wood trans. Way nice guy and knows his stuff. He told me these trans-es starve the torque converters on long pulls. He does a mod to bypass that problem. You guys will like the fifth wheel setup, we sure love ours! I'll never go back to a bumper pull.

I will be picking up a 39 foot Teton fifth wheel the end of the month. Weighs 14k. Towing from Kelso WA to Burley ID about about 650 miles. Just wondering if you had any feed back on how your truck did?

Just remember! Towing the load is easy, any truck can move a big load once it gets started. You NEED to work on braking! I tow a 14k toyhauler. I added a triple axle digital brake controller and an exhaust brake. We pulled to Oregon through the cascades, 8% windy road for 10 miles, with a six speed, i shifted into 4th, set the exhaust brake, and cruised down at 40 mph without ever touching the brake pedal. Also too, just because you can haul at 80, doesn't mean you should! I run 68 top speed no matter where I go.

I thought I would give you some feedback on towing the trailer that I mentioned in a previous post. Trailer is a 39 foot Teton fifth wheel. Weighs 13700 combined weight of 21000 lbs or so. Truck handled the the weight better than I thought it would. I do have air bags on the back. That makes a huge difference in the way it handles. It gets heavy pulling hills. I pulled Cabbage Hill on I84(Oregon) at 40 mph. It is a steep long windy pull. I have installed gauges everything stayed nice and cool. I got 8-9 mpg. I dont know if you ever got that toy hauler but I figured this might help you out.

40mph up that hill with that weight sounds pretty good to me. I went into that hill going a little too fast towing my blazer when we moved out here, had me a little nervous. That hill gives my mini van a good work out.

Haven't done it yet, but it is still in the works. Waiting on a settlement from the fire before we can purchase. I do appreciate the feedback though, makes me a lot more confident in my decision.
