From the news report pictures and footage it looks as though the accident happened on the Jacobs Ladder route. They said he came in from the Alpine side, he likely tied into Jacobs Ladder not from the Corner Canyon road but further east along the narrow route that runs right down the ridge? A very tragic accident.

Lots of morals could be inferred from whats unfolding to be a most tragic accident but the reality is we don't know what happened and its very possible a second rig would have done nothing more but speed up the unsettling news to the families involved. I go four wheeling in a single rig often, just last week we did a few hundred miles in the middle of the West Desert in the middle of the night. However we are prepared to do so. I have a locating device that my wife and others can use to determine our exact location, I have food, shelter, water, tools, weapons, flare gun and a cell phone. Sure we can find a scenario in which I would be SOL without a second rig, I can find equally as many where two rigs can be screwed. There is some intrinsic danger when you leave your house, for some that danger is too much and needs to be mitigated, for others the danger is the reason to leave home. Assess the risk and prepare accordingly, you will never satisfy all variables and attempts to do so will leave you paranoid at best.
Very well said.

While this is a very unfortunate incident, I do not agree with your comment above. Having a second, third, or 10 other vehicles most likely wouldn't have prevented this from happening. They went out ill prepared, and paid the ultimate for it.

Sad, yes.

I'm going to have to slightly disagree with your comment. Yes, they went out ill prepared and weren't dressed for the weather....but that doesn't mean that if there were another rig there the outcome would've been the same. Another rig (or 10) would mean there would be a much better chance that others in the group could have called for help and or aided their injuries. We don't know if they passed away on impact or froze due to the freezing temps and injuries. The article states the girl was outside the vehicle....doesn't say she was thrown from....:-\

Either way I think it's wrong to say that more vehicles wouldn't have helped the situation. It's always best to wheel in groups rather than alone....not saying you can't go alone though.

It is very sad though and I guess at least they passed away together.

It's all about being prepared. I simply stated, if you reread my post, that more vehicles most likely would not have prevented such an event. More in the party may have been able to get help there sooner; but that may have been in vain. As you stated, with little information we don't know the exact details of whether they died quickly or waited for help until it was too late... But that is somewhat beside the point, from the point that I was making... Simply saying that it is "not a very smart idea" to go out alone is just not true..

Frankly, more vehicles may have resulted in more injuries or possibly deaths. Heroic measures are not often well thought-through.

It seems to me that the driver made a mistake, maybe a simple one, and they paid the ultimate price.

Very Sad! However do you think a cage would have helped? I do know that XJs have very poor structures and a roll cage may have saved there lives. Still a very crappy deal.

Too sad for those two. RIP.

I remember sliding down the side of a ravine in Corner Canyon (that would have been between '86 and '88), doing my best to keep the shiny side up. The whole slope was muddy and sliding/moving with me, and there was a monster fullsize-bronco-eating hole directly ahead. Some lucky timing on the throttle and brake, the right momentum, and the Grace of God was the difference that afternoon between a few dollars at the carwash and an early departure from this life.

Oh yes, I started out on an existing road, that was legal and open at the time.

Isn't the Hogs Hollow area still open? I went there all this summer and fall and where I entered there are no posted signs, chains, ropes, barriers, rocks, or anything. We'd always head up to Jacobs Ladder for the view and head back down. There are tons of trails up there that look traveled very often. The only part I can imagine being able to go off is before you get to the Jacobs Ladder trailhead when you're going through the rocks on the left side. Is this the possible area...if anyone has been up there and remembers?

RIP Guys!

There are signs, gates, chains and barriers galore on the Draper side.

I'm still trying to figure out they got to where I think they are. The main entrances to Jacobs Ladder have been reclaimed and signed, the other more plausible route had a tank trap in front of it the last time I was there. I can say for certainty it closed on paper, whether or not the signage on the ground is there is a moot point in this situation.
