Mechanical vs. electric fans

Which is better is mostly personal opinion.

Problems I see with the choices you gave; #1 clearly states that it must have a shroud so it wouldn't work for you; #2 is only 3000 cfm, which probably isn't enough for a V-8 around Moab; #3 doesn't even list how much air they are supposed to move, so it's probably considerably less than the 3000 cfm of #2 plus the mounting size restrictions.

If you're really thinking electric go with the '94 & later Taurus 2 speed. They move something like 4200 cfm on high and can be had for next to nothing from a junkyard. Mine keeps my Bronco cooled enough to run A/C most of the time I'm wheeling.

no fan will work without a shroud. The electrics have built in shrouds but the mechanical doesn't (obviously). As mentioned, the Taurus fan will spank just about any aftermarket fan and at a fraction of the cost. They are extremely easy to pull too. It would take me about 2 minutes (literally) to pull one, I use to go and pull all I could find and then sell them.

Are all the '94 and later Taurus fans 2 speed? How do you tell them from a single speed? Is there some kind of a special relay needed with them? Thanks

it's not garanteed to be 2 speed or single speed no matter the engine, year, etc. You ahve to know what the fan looks like. It's been a while but I think the two speed has three wires coming out of it and the single speed has two wires. Here is a pic of what a two speed looks like.

if you notice the two speed is rectangle, the single speed has a corner "chopped" off (I don't have a pic of the single speed)

I'm going with a 2 spd taurus fan too. I pulled one from a yard about 3 weeks ago. It came from a mid 90's taurus with the 3.8 L. After seeing the fan in kruzr69's rig in action, I knew that was what I wanted too. It moves a LOT of air. I paid $30 and it only took a few minutes to pull. Apparently the taurus fan pulls a lot of amperage too (I've heard 30 amps continuous, 90 to 100 at startup) so you'll need a large relay or continuous duty solenoid.

I just happen to have one sitting on my garage shelf that I can not use due to it is tooo deep for my CJ-7... if anyone would like to buy it from me it would be nice to get it off my shelf.... it came off a taurus with a 3.8L motor with A/C.

John

P.S. it does have three wires and you can also wire it backwards so that it pushes air from the front side instead of pulling from the engine side....

GJ, don't forget the problems that I had with my fans while we were on the Pickle a couple of months ago!! Choose a good thermostat (not flex-a-lite 31147..it's junk), or I recommend wiring it to the ignition so its always on when the engine is running. If you have a bad thermostat like I do, you'll just overheat every 10 minutes. Don't use a dash switch either, everyone just forgets to turn the fan on.

This is what I do, and recommend as well. I had issues in the past with overheating when a thermostat control failed to turn the fan on.
