Mini preview of the weekend

Maybe a mile...

Both roads go down to the river, but I honestly don't know which one he rode. We scouted a way to get a full-size down, it would be sketchy but doable... There were recent OHV tracks down by the river too, and they are not going around the barracade, so they might have gone down the same we scouted? I'll try and find the article...

Isn't there the "Behind the Reef" trail the ATV's can take to come up the canyon that way? I think it's on the map that I have. I'll grab it later and check.

Actually I think the washout isn't where they go down, there are some inter-twines up higher on the hill that go above the washout as I recall. I know the big washout your referring too (has a tailgate and a 55 gallon drum in it??), unless there is something that washed in the last few weeks?

Pretty sure that's the same spot we're both talking about.

Crappy pic I took a couple of years ago, but here is the cabins with the road in the pic too. At this time (Feb 06') there were still alot of OHV tracks in the area. I can't rember if this was before or after the vetran ride deal?

Man, now I wish we had hiked down there to check them out. :(

Next time!

My pic is the second fence... I didn't go down to the airstrip fence last month, but I've been there a couple of other times... Both roads connect along the river near an old tram base or pump house?

Well, have to take another trip down there. We now know of a awesome camp site as well to go to ;)

I think that you can actually still hike into some of the mines as well? Might be fun to peek into them a bit.......

No, the Behind the Reef trail is where I smacked my rocker panel, its between Temple Mountain and Horse Valley, though there is an additional portion that connects to the Hidden Splendor Mine Road though its a couple of miles before the mines. Check your map fool...

Actually in looking at the map, the area around the cabins and likely the mines is not WSA, its just closed to motorized travel. The original road would have crossed the WSA SE of the mine a couple of miles though.

I did the same thing... I first saw them two years before I finally hiked down... now I'm wishing I had hiked all the way down the river towards FB.

Dunno why I called it that, we drove down that spot where you smacked your rocker on Saturday. Bunch of people on ATV's told us we couldn't fit through. Kind of interesting since it's damn narrow and right on the edge. I just scraped my control arm and diff....Otherwise it was fine!

Too bad :(

Well, time to plan another trip eh?

One thing that suprised me is that it seems to not get much traffic at all in that area by fullsize rigs. All the trails were ATV paths.......

Just odd to me

Where at?

Yup, for the time being there are ALOT of mines open in the Swell... but that is scheduled to change in the coming years, the OGM is planning on closing a couple hundered openings in the Swell alone. There map of the proposed closures has been helpful in finding them :D

The is a mine we played in last month, its at Tomsich Butte (north of the Hidden Splendor also along the Muddy Creek). It was big enough inside that ATV's had been riding up and down the tunnels

We took the last spot on Wild Horse Canyon. On the west side I believe, right before the WSA begins.

And I dunno if I'd want to drive an ATV in a mine. Too loud....I'd be afraid the ceiling would come down on me!

Well, Cody has to get Erin's pictures and mine are all at home on the computer.

The Racetrack is pretty fun to do as well.......snow must have made that fun in December

Well get them... no excuses!

It wasn't that bad with snow really... there were a couple of spots coming out of the canyon that were nasty, Cody had a non-op hub that was killing him in the snow, but after that we were up and out.

The 18th eh? Can I go and we can have an off road B-day party that day for me?

I'll be 28

Yes & No... in that order...

Route is in the works, but it will likely be a "best of the swell" run, stopping by some of the neater places in the upper swell and ending in the lower swell. I'll have an itinerary finished up later this week... and I'll know more about the amount of spots we have open. A couple of guys from ExPo will be joining us (one from Canada ). Likely leaving SLC thursday afternoon, returning home sunday or monday. If your interested email me (but don't expect an immediate response!).

I hiked down to the river, and jogged down to where the road crossed, but I didn't want to get wet crossing the river so I jogged back. I wanted to go see the cabins, but I was veto'd due to health reasons by the same guy that 15 minutes earlier was lobbying to hike up the mountain to the mines.

That road coming down where you hit your rockers Kurt was pretty cool. I'm not sure a 78" wide rig was really meant to be on that these days, but it really wasn't too bad. Brett's width made it much easier for him I think. I had to go high side on some large loose rocks that tilted me to the edge....and then my co-pilot was nice enough to scream as she's looking at the edge as I drop off a little rock making me think that the soft edge had given way.....

Nice area. The Upper Little Wild Horse Wash was a dissapointment to me, but the camping site in "big" Wild Horse canyon (as the BLM guy called it, also the same guy who said "I dunno, it's all pretty I guess" when asked what was down there of interest) was stunning, especially with the full moon.

Kurt, as per our previous discussion, I'm still in for this trip.
