We would have loved to have you and your brother tag along Andrew. I think Beef Basin would have been too much for your rig. I think Elephant Hill was easier than Beef Basin.

Really? I thought Beef Basin was just dirt roads.

Still very bummed I missed this. Everywhere you went is on my list, and I can't think of a mellower crew of dudes to see it with. Glad you all had fun!

awesome trip report as always steve. Looks like some great scenery. Its awesome to see how much Utah has to offer in the back country.

Cool trail, great report, as is your custom. Lockhart Basin and Beef Basin are on the to-do list. Elephant Hill is an annual event for us during Jeep Safari, so fun to share it with folks from all over the country; added to that, it's my kids' favorite Moab trail. Awesome that you were able to do Lockhart, EH and Beef all in one trip.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
Great trip report. If someone (ok, me) was to copy that trip, could I use the Wells guide book to find the cool stuff you found or could you post up some directions, heck, or even lead the way?

that looks like a lot of fun, looks like my 02 4door silver tacoma on 255's might have fit in :) haha

you definitely would have fit in, along with your fiance. Get that wedding thing taken care of then we'll get you on some of these trips.

Here's the breakdown of how I planned this trip:

50% Charles Wells Book
20% Benchmark Atlas of Utah
10% ExpeditionUtah past trip reports
20% Figuring it out as I get there

For these trips I almost never have a campsite locked down before I get there; I usually figure that out when I'm on the trail. (which is why we often don't set up camp 'till after dark). I look for what I want in a camp site as I drive, making sure I'm treading lightly staying in a pre-established campsite, then I go from there. I don't create fire rings where there weren't any before. By the time we leave you can't tell we camped there.

Great trip report. If someone (ok, me) was to copy that trip, could I use the Wells guide book to find the cool stuff you found?

The wells book will lead you to the airplane wreckage, a couple ruins, and outline all the trails. You'll have to look at the big-picture maps and the Atlas to see how they all connect, but those two books should be all you need to complete the route. The other stuff we found (the cache, the camp sites, a few of the ruins, etc) we found by exploring the areas a bit more.

Most of my trips are copies of other trips I saw and wanted to do myself. The main reason I post trip reports is so others can see what an area is like and plan a trip based off it. For someone duplicating this trip, I would recommend getting a permit/reservation at Devil's Kitchen campground in Needles district. It's an awesome place to camp. It didn't work with our timetable, but I've camped there before and it was awesome.

Could you post up some directions, heck, or even lead the way?

Regarding leading the trail...my dream would be to lead trails as my full-time job. Unfortanately I have a desk job to pay for my adventures. My 2013 is 98% booked, and I don't have any desires to do Lockhart again any time soon (a bit too long and boring for my tastes). It's definitely worth doing at least once, but there are too many other places I want to explore before doing that trail again.

If you're thinking about heading up there, keep me in the loop. I'd be happy to help you plan the trip if you need, and I may even tag along for part of it, who knows? I love seeing trip reports motivate people to get out and wheel more.

Devils kitchen is on my places to camp this summer. Just the brief amount of time I spent having lunch there during EJS made me want to go back. Also didn't get to do the cool hike in the slot canyons, since I opted for the confluence side

Great Report and thanks for sharing! I love that area, we did elephant hill last friday and I GPS'd the confluence hike it was 0.35 miles. You were right. Unfortunately we took almost no pictures this trip so I probably wont have a report. I noticed the entrance to beef basin has changed as I remembered it last time I was there we drove right through the ranch area. That was almost 20years ago with my dad though, sadly I've only done day trips to elephant hill since then.. Looks awesome, all those ruins bring back some great memories
