This truck has more potential than I gave it credit for. The floor mats and no carpet make it a bit noisy. The early turbo has a little more whistle to it. Cool if you're not on a three hour drive. The manual really makes a good truck great. Now, about those glow plugs.... it's time.

With one Jeep on the trailer, I only had to bump into 5th a few times. Impressed I am

A late model deezel would smoke this thing. It can do the speed limit in the canyons. Good enough for me

Also the steep dawg hill coming home just before Wellington. I hope I'm not in 3rd gear there but I'll be SHOCKED if I can pull it in 5th (1:1). Hoping 4th gear and 2500-2600 rpm gets me 55 mph up that hill

I am also very curious how your truck will handle that hill (which is ~20 miles outside of Wellington IIRC). Please do report back with your findings.

I am Jealous of tour Manual 7.3. I wish mine was.

It really is awesome. Just got home and filled up.

I filled in Helper Maverick. Helper to Moab (123)- Moab to Bountiful (243) = 366 miles for 10.5 mpg.

Hill out of Moab past Arches as you crest the top, topped at 63 mph. Beast Hill just before Wellington, 59 mph. F350 chassis is sweet.

Here you've got an ancient glow plug relay. 20241107_161037.jpg

Used a test light and nothing crossing with the key on. That's a good thing.
It means I've got a solid chance the relay might make a big difference. I don't think I've even tried to start the truck since Oct 19 when I got back from Moab.

Fancy fresh and new Dorman. (Not my favorite brand) I gave it a cycle and verify test light on the 2nd lug. Hit the starter and grumpy 7.3L lights off.

New relay. HUUUUGGGGEEEE difference.

(That's my presidential version)

I did add this fancy actual cupholder for those with early '99 trucks. It actually holds drinks and the slot thing will hold my Samsung S23+ vertically. I don't remember paying $70 for it like it's currently quoted. I think I was around $45 about a month ago. https://a.co/d/3c4mZoF

Was pretty handy on my trip up/back to Smithfield yesterday.

On the way back, I got stuck in one of these things again. That turned into about a 55 minute delay. That's the third freeway shutdown issue I've had since I've had the truck along with an additional traffic stop in my Buick. The truck and it's stick/clutch is a bit annoying in these places as you'd expect.

This happened just as I got up to speed from getting on the freeway in Brigham City. I was at a dead stop countless times from there until the Port of Entry. Just as I was nearing the entrance to the freeway for the big trucks from the Port of Entry, all the emergency vehicles lights shut off and traffic picked up. The incident seemed to be just at the curve where the exit is for the Flying J (I think that's 750 N?). Blocking all lanes can't be good for those involved in the incident. I haven't heard what happened but hope all are doing as well as they can be with whatever happened ahead of me on the freeway.

Updates on this:

  • I'll be installing a gooseneck hitch in this over the next few days. Truck took the place of the Buick in the garage. Buick took the place of the Gladiator. Gladiator is outside for a few days
  • I'm starting to form up thoughts about a receiver mounted winch for trailer use (or self recovery I guess?). Anderson connectors to an accessible place near the rear hitch of the truck. Also add a hitch mount somewhere on the gooseneck for direct trailer deck pulls.
  • I also would like to have my NAPA air compressor semi-permanently mounted within my bed toolbox
  • Sections in the toolbox for straps/chains/etc.
  • This leads me to think adding an additional battery in the toolbox wouldn't be a bad idea? Should I run that independently of the two start batteries and just have it charge off the alternator like the other two? Add it to the existing pair of batteries (is this even a good idea? Alternator concerns?)? Run "naked" with a solar panel on top of the toolbox deck for a charger?
  • I'm getting a well used (matches the truck ;)) but still operational gooseneck car hauler flatbed from a friend of a friend of a friend late next week. I'm planning to use tire straps to tie vehicles down rather than my trademark chains.
    • Thoughts on E-track vs hooks (both of those will require trailer mods but that's embraced) ???
    • Trailer deck thoughts: E-track welded to the deck or dimple die runners for hooks (or I've seen expanded metal used there...not sure about expanded metal) ???
    • Stick with chains and do the integrated chain hooks along the open center of the trailer deck?
  • Truck will get a "go through" for glow plugs and injector check up sometime in April (unless I come into lots of dollars between now and then)
  • Possibly some new tires before a long trip in May

Tie down version 1 (E-track)

Conceptually this type from a reputable vendor

Goals will be to haul two trail Jeeps (@ebryson and myself) on the trailer, my Buick and trail Jeep, my trail Jeep and my Gladiator (that's a tough ask), two Buicks or whatever. The tie down solution will pretty much have to run the whole length of the trailer deck (chains aren't a bad solution here my knuckle dragging self sez) for the flexibility. Some of those loads will really tax the truck. We'll see if I should throw some diff gears at it (take out V10 4.30 axles? Maybe I just buy some gears and put some fresh bearings in...not a bad choice at all.)

Compressed air usage is probably rare but kind of obvious. Cost is not significant and it's quite easy to do. I might even provide a different fitting than my L-Style pneumatic connectors. I'm probably the only person on the board using these?

The winch thing won't be used lot but I've had situations come up that a winch on the front of the trailer would be NICE. Also potentially handy for other "chore" type things along with self recovery (not likely in this truck?)

ETRACK gives you the ability to adjust your load very easily where the hooks do not. On my trailer, I have two strips of ETRACK centered on my tires and then have an ETRACK to HOOK adapter. I can get a 4 place full width RZR ProR 4 and 5 motorcycles on my 22' trailer. Works slick to be able to have that adjustability.
