New tow rig!

I own a tow rig again... :D I really bought it for work, but it'll also serve to pull the 4Runner around on the weekends as well. I'm excited to be able to tow again, driving the 4Runner to the trail is OK, but it's not the quickest option anymore.

It's a '98 Dodge with a 24 valve Cummins & 5 speed, Quad cab, short bed, 130k miles.

I found it on eBay... in New Hampshire. I flew out there on saturday night & got back home tuesday afternoon. 2300 miles in 3 days, a hell of a way to test out a new (to me) vehicle. Iowa sucks... so does Chicago traffic/construction. So do drunk hoodlums who come poking around your truck at 2am while you're trying to catch some shut-eye. -_-

The best thing is the Edge Comp controller... holy s*#t! It makes driving FUN! Even in the lowest setting it's quick, much diffrent that my old stock Cummins diesel. I need to get an owners manual for it, see what I'm toying with when I push the buttons. :greg: Oh, it also has a newly installed ceramic clutch. Which is a good thing, cause I don't know that a stock clutch would be suffucient.

I'm going to put an Aero Exhaust muffler on it & add a BHAF & that'll probably be it. Mabey some bigger injectors down the road. ;) It has enough power for me... and would probably get great mileage if I kept my foot out of the throttle.

The tires are 285's and I hate the steel wheels. I picked up a set of nice Aluminum factory Dodge wheels (thanks JKS!), but apparently you have to turn down the drums on the '98's to make them fit. So that's the next step.

 Glad you got it..saw on Priate you were having shipping problems.

Yeah, that was a bad deal. I really, REALLY didn't want to fly out & drive back but I had the time & it cost much less than going thru the shipper. I'm glad I did go out there, but the drive was too much. I don't want to do that again.

I came over I-70 West of Denver yesterday, right after the big storm hit. Traffic was a mess, vehicles rolled over, wrecked into each other, off the side of the road, stuck on the road, etc. They closed the freeway down at one point for 30 miles, so I had to take a 70 mile detour. There was almost 2 feet of snow & with the winds there were times where I could barely see the road. But the truck did great, it impressed me!

Out of curiosity, did you drive it 2300 miles without license plates? I can't imagine you could license it in CO, without it being there yet...

your old truck isn't slow any more ;)

nice new wheels

I know, Chad keep updating me. He's a nut... Last I heard he was pushing something like 600+ HP?!

Thanks. :)

Nope, I bought it from a dealer/wholesaler who gave me a 15 day temp permit, of course from the state of NH. I'm getting it registered tomorrow, CO makes this so much easier than UT. I'll just transfer the plates from my Tacoma & pay the tax man.

Man, I was on the Edge site looking at the Comp specs.... :redneck:

The Edge Comp module maximizes engine efficiency by monitoring the RPM, timing, turbo boost pressure and fueling parameters of your Cummins engine. The Comp module uses this information to determine and control both fueling and timing enhancements for the Bosch fuel injection pump. Timing and fueling enhancements are controlled via CAN-BUS through the Data Link and by connecting directly into the Bosch fuel injection pump.

The Edge Comp features five power levels with power gains from 40-120 horsepower. Each of the levels has five independent adjustable sub-levels to control low boost fueling, providing a total of 25 levels of adjustability! The responsiveness settings enable you to dial-in the optimum balance between responsiveness and low boost smoke control no matter what additional power modifications have been made to the engine. The Comp module is fully adjustable on-the-fly and mounts inside the cab.

The following power gains are representative of an actual test vehicle. These gains were measured on a SuperFlow Dyno at an altitude of 4400 ft above sea level, and represent power delivered to the rear wheels of the test truck. The only modification made to the test truck was the addition of the Edge Juice module. Power gains may vary based on vehicle and geographical location.

Level 0: Stock
Level 1: 40 Horsepower - 150 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 2: 60 Horsepower - 200 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 3: 80 Horsepower - 250 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 4: 100 Horsepower - 300 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 5: 120 Horsepower - 350 Foot Pounds of Torque

Makes sense, the guy I bought it from actually gets his used vehicles from the new car dealers. The new dealers get the trade-ins & if it's not their brand or has too many miles, they don't want to bother with selling them on their lot. So he picks them up for a bit more than they paid & he wholesales them. His philosophy was more cars for less $$. I liked the idea.

Leave it on level 5 all the time ;)

No. Too much smoke. And it's kinda hard to drive, boost comes on too quickly.

I think I got a deal, the aftermarket parts make it sweeter though.

I figure this was much easier then a 4BT in a Toyota. Now I have my Cummins & the Toyota, serving diffrent uses. :D
