So my wife has decided she is in love with the newer Tacoma's:D:D:D

I obviously won't let her pic one out because she won't pay any attention if it's a TRD or not. For me the TRD is a must. Just looking for input on what is the better engine/trans combo. I prefer a manual and she says she doesn't care. This is going to be staying stock since it will be "her" truck but it still needs to get us out camping when we won't need the Jeep.

Thanks for the input guys.

Edit: looking for 2001 and newer probably up to 2008 to keep the price resonable.

Having just purchased one under nearly exact circumstances I would submt to you if it is hers, and the intend is to be able to still get out to a camp site there is no need to spend the extra 4.5K or sofor the TRD package. That package basically gets you bilstein shocks which you could purchase and install yourself at a savings not to mention the shocks under the SR5 package are just fine. It gives you a locker which in what you describe you don't need, heck for that matter lately I have been keeping my Rubicon on 6 rated trails or less (which it sounds like the Tacoma probably will not be put a 6 or a 5 rated trail for that matter and never find the need for a locker. Then you get a few extra skid plates. Not worth the cost of the upgrade.

You may find yourself such as I did after you price a used one and come to the realization that these vehicles possibly could be the least depreciating on the face of the earth that you would just be better off buying new.

We love the heck out of ours, 4 door auto long bed.

I picked an '06 access cab up a few months ago Brian, I have the 4.0 and Auto. I dig the auto, I'm usually a fan of sticks, but for the mostly around the town stuff, and the not so hard 4x4 trail i've come to enjoy my auto especially since I have the 4.0 in front of it.

not sure what the MPG comparison is but i'm averaging right around 21-22 mpg. I also opted for TRD package ofcourse, being a slightly older one it didn't ding me as much on the price, but I have to say i'm really surprised how flexy it is after a few trips to Moab

Edit: After reading your post again (it is 3 am after all) As far as engine/tranny options, if you are looking at a TRD package I believe you are limited to the 4.0, I don't think you can get the 4 banger with TRD. I may be wrong but not 100%.

I know when we bought my ladies FJ new they actually recommend the AUTO for towing if you plan on doing any of that. The FJ 6 speed is basicly all wheel drive with a low range so that may have something to do with it.

wow, that's a great price. I need to unsubscribe from this thread before I do something drastic.

You got some kayaks you need to buy ;)

One of the guys I work with has a 2005 Tacoma 4 door and he's been happy with it, I believe he's got the TRD sport model so it has a limited slip instead of the e-locker. It's got the 4.0L and an an auto and it rides nice, I believe he's got a little larger tire 285/70/17 than stock but the gearing feels good to me.

I'm really hoping my wife comes through and decides she wants to do this. One minute she is all in and the next it's well we don't need it.

I just bought a 2010 4d short bed TRD Offroad. This is very true.

Words of wisdom here. The one thing I will add is if it's going to be her truck with the occasional camping trip, why does she not get to choose it? I know we always know best, but IMO, if it's my wife's then it's her's to choose also. She'll enjoy it more if it was 100% her choice on what she got.

All she cares about is color and four doors, color isn't even that important to her. She doesn't know the first thing about vehicles so she would end up getting a two wheel drive. Sure that might save some gas but I won't let her do it. If she does end up getting one the final decision on which one will be hers after I check it out myself.

I'm not sure how she feels about 1st or 2nd gen. I like them both, I think I like the body style on the 1st gens a little more though. Right now I think she wants to wait until she graduates sometime in the next year and finds a job. I think she really wants to be able to pay for it herself.
