Newish GTO vs. last gen Mustang

I almost bought a GTO a couple years ago(as it turns out It only has 2 seatbelts in the back and I have 3 kids, even after I offered to add another one, she wasn't going for it), go test drive one, you'll never look back, I had a hard time getting it to stick up with factory tires, it's got enough power to pull 11-12 through the quarter, but not enough weight in the back - and not enough weight transfer, a battery relocator kit and some shock tuning and stickier tires would make a world of difference, they handle great through the twisties too, nearly flat roll. -> ask someone who knows me - how hard I'd push it ;)

your right, and those civics would leave your big V-8 "muscle cars" in the dust.

there hasnt been a real car built in america since the 70's:eek:

There's been a few. You just have to look harder for them. '86-88 GNs are SWEET, but they don't 'qualify' for Meat. They'll STOMP that year 'vette and are EASILY modified to be WICKED fast. Some full bodied ones have run in the 8s and it's pretty common to see them in the 9 and 10 second range at the dragstrip.

To me, "muscle car" means, RWD, prodigious power that you can spin the rear skins whenever you want.

A Camaro/Mustang/Challenger/Cuda is more of a 'pony car' to me than a muscle car.

11-12? :eek::eek::eek:

I'll give it 14-15, but not 11-12. Sorry, you'll have to spend money to get to 11-12. A traditional big block muscle car is kinda rough to drive on the street when they're that fast.

far enough away
but... but... what about the 9-second Eclipses like in Fast and Furious????

My uncle had an 11sec '69 Camaro. It was ugly on the street, you're right.

GM says it's a 13 second car in their documentation

"The awesome powertrain is capable of propelling the GTO form 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and 13-second quarter mile times."

I really think if you could get better weight transfer and more traction you could put a stock GTO to 12. The tremic t-56 cleans up the shift throw between 2-3 and 3-4 so the gearing is ton's better, you can keep the engine in it's power band instead of either over-revving the 2-3 shift, or short shifting it.

Did the rough calcuations accleration vs hp, assumes no loss of traction and 13% parisitic power loss, 400HP with 3925lbs (GTO+Driver) should run 12.470
at 109.30 mph. (also note that GM is conservative with power numbers)

I'll believe it when I see a timeslip. (frankly, I'll believe the 13 when I see a timeslip--that ain't slow)

It's GM. They haven't thought about anything other than marketing and 'packages' for the past 20 years.

That's for sure, that's why the Mustang GT outsells the GTO 3:1 even though the GTO spanks it as far as power goes, altho- I saw an anniversary edition elenor the other day in Boutiful, it was sweeeeet, I'd re-think the GTO after looking at that. -considering I rarely race anything anymore-

Haha, you guys crack me up

I am only really interested in the vehicles I listed, so I don't think I will be looking at those other ones.

I really am starting to like the idea of a GTO, and as far as repair costs for a BMW, thats not even a concern for me,,, come on,, I drive a Land Rover right now :D:D

I've only ever looked into the new GTO's one time, and I was HIGHLY unimpressed. They are decently quick, but my tuned STi could walk all over it. ;) I know you're not interested in an STi, so I'll move past that. Back to the GTO... They're ugly! The body lines don't line up very well(the one I was looking at anyway). It looks like a grand am. Eww...
If you want fast, get an SVT and put a 13 psi pulley on it, of course you'll need exhaust and intake, and preferably some engine management. You'll max out the stock speed limiter(160mph) in 6th gear at 4500rpms, with EM though, you can remove the speed limiter. ;)
If you want luxury, and speed, get the M3... or, the M5 or M6 if you could fork the bill. I thinnk the 3 series look better though. Tougher front ends. Get exhaust and intake and I think EM from Denon. They also make a supercharger, a VERY expensive supercharger. But it puts you at around 500 whp.
My buddy drives a 99 Camaro, his fastest time slip at RMR was a 10.29. That is built though, and anything faster than a 10.99 requires a cage, so that might not interest you. But Camaros and Mustangs are very inexpensive to make fast.
Ya, and back to the STi... I know you don't like the wing or the hood scoop. But just get a spoiler from a 2007 limited, very small and suttle, kinda like nascars. then do a front mount intercooler, so you no longer need the hood scoop. It is 4 doors, which you also don't want, but it helps a little on insurance. Do exhaust, intake, EM and you'd be sittin close to 300awhp. It makes for a VERY fun car! Plus, you can join SCCA and race at MMP, E-center, Wendover airport, etc... Go fast legally!
Anyway, sorry for the long rant... I'm bored at work. Another thing for ya though, check out utahmusclecars.com.. It's a forum like this. Cool guys.

What year GTO did you look at? just curious

Sounds fun,, but also sounds like jail time! lol I like the Cobra's but they are hard to find in decent condition

Yeah, my friend has looked at the supercharger made by a shop here in Utah, its sweet, but also $10,000! I don't really want a M5 or M6 because insurance would rip me a new one

I just can't get past the dang punk kid attitude that these cars have, and finding a decent one that hasn't had the bejesus beat out of it by someone might be hard.

I don't remember what year the GTO was.... I'm thinkin it was the 2006.

I really think after reading this entire post and analyzing your responses, you'd be most happy in an M3... My cousin who I bought my STi from has a 2005 M3 and he loves it. He's done exhaust, intake, and EM and it's just barely slower than my STi, except on the top end. Anywhere after 100 and his acceleration in the beemer can eat me. But I don't need to go that fast anyway, out of the hole is the fun part!

And just so you can get the idea, here's some pics of the sexiest STi I have ever seen... Again, you could do the FMIC and get rid of the hood scoop, even more sleek.

The first pic is with that '07 Limited spoiler I was talkin about, second is completely wingless.
And, just in case, he was tryin to sell that STi a while back... You can see it Here
