any idea where the odor is? Carpet? Interior insulation? Headliner?

I'm not sure, but potentially all of the above. I have the heat on in the garage tonight with the windows all down and sunroof open. I will see if that make a difference, then I may drop the headliner in the coming weeks when time allows to see what i can see if nothing helps. Maybe I will put the febreeze commercials to test and spray the interior with a bottle and see if that covers it sufficiently. :)

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
I'm impressed! You just got it and are already going canoeing.

The odor issue reminds me of a certain Seinfeld episode.

Not often wrong. Never quite right.

I don't know if mold odor is anything like cigarette smoke odor, but after I quit smoking I used a damned lot of that Arm & Hammer odor eliminator powder. I pulled the carpet out of the truck, covered it with a couple cans of the stuff, vacuumed it up and left them in the sun for an afternoon. That killed most of it.

Febreze didn't work, for what it's worth. It covered the smell but didn't remove it.

is there anything that smells better than coffee or bacon? I say you run up to Grannie Annie's or Sills and let them dump coffee and bacon in it, let it sit for a day and them clean it out

I am not a fan of the coffee smell, but you may be on to something with the Bacon... I have to wait until Friday to try anything, the sunroof didn't come in so the dealer is keeping it until Friday to do the install.

In the mean time, i am working on my realistic plan for the vehicle so i can plan my modification purchases to coincide with the plan. I have a sickness for overbuilding and overspending and need to find the cure on this vehicle. I could easily spend another $15k on stuff when i can likely get buy spending $3k...:p

So the sunroof is bad? What is actually causing it to leak?

The sunroof drains are a common leak point on many vehicles, Toyota included. Basically you have a drain hose that catches moisture and drains it to the ground. They get clogged up with pine needles, dirt, etc and/or break off and you have a leak on your hands.

I had a leak on my old Volvo VX70 and it was a piece of trim/support that had come loose from the glass. Got some glass glue and put it back together and didn't have a problem after that.

Shoot... Maybe I shouldn't have talked my GX up so much with ya...I might've gotten ya to buy my LX... :p

Nice to see another GX gonna get some offroad love. I agree on the color--Is one of the better colors on these for sure. Did you run into any of the creme/beige ones?--has to be the most hideous color toyota has ever done.... :puke:

The dealer stated that the seal is pulling away from the glass and is what is causing the leak. Maybe they just want my money, but they recommend replacing the whole glass assembly, so that is what I am having them do. I will check into the drain hose as well and make sure that is connected and clear when I drop the headliner to chase the smell.

LOL. You definitely opened my eyes to the GX. I liked your LX, but I really struggled with the lack of umph in the big heavy LC’s. It reminded me too much of my gutless 2010 JKUR.

After driving the GX, with the extra space inside vs a 4Runner, and seeing pictures of them on IH8MUD, I decided that was the way for me to go.

I saw a couple beige GX’s, and that isn’t a color I would choose, but if the price was right, I may have bought one. I like the blue A LOT more though.

Got it back from the dealer today with a nice new sunroof! Now i need to run it through the car wash and make sure it doesn't leak anymore so i can go after the smell.

Tomorrow, if i have time, the running boards are coming off, and new plugs are going in.

From this thread years ago: https://www.rme4x4.com/showthread.php?71072-Gas-smell

...

I bought some stuff from the Dept of Natural Resources one time... it's called Neutroleum Alpha... Comes in a glass bottle cased in a Styrofoam shell. They use it to get rid of roadkill type smells. I used it to get smokers stank out of a truck I bought. Works super bitchin!

IIRC it's about $20 for a bottle that'll last you years. Just go to the office on North Temple and ask for it.
