Noob tow rig questions

Well, I've decided I want a 98-2004 Dodge RAM 2500 6-speed extended cab 4x4. They're rare and expensive, but I think that's the truck I want. Thanks for your help everybody, I know it's been a long, tedious thread, but I really appreciate your help!

I had an 01 Laramie quad cab automatic and all options--heated leather seats too! :chris:. It was a great to own in the 35,000 miles I put on it. Upgrade the trac bar, only run the best front end components and you will want an upgraded fuel lift pump for sure. Great trucks imo :)

Not sure but they had the highest model trim. Laramie's are pretty common most of them had that package unless they were stripped down work trucks. Mine was an XLT laramie with the wood grain dash, leather and all options. The HUGE fold out towing mirrors are really nice to have too.

My 7.3 gets 17 empty and 12 pulling the Jeep. It does have 4.10 gears which doesnt help my mpgs. Like Rot Box said it is a matter of when with all of the autos. I looked for a 5 speed for a long time and couldnt find one with the other stuff I wanted. Settled for a auto and replaced it 2 months ago. That being said I really like the auto. Damn I must be getting lazy.

I paid 3000.00 for mine. I spent a little more. Stock rebuild runs about 1800.00. I upgraded all of the clutches, billet convertor, and then added on magtec pan and big cooler

When my auto went i replaced it for $3500.00, for $800 I could have swapped a scrap yard manual in it.....

Well, I've decided I want a 98-2004 Dodge RAM 6-speed

Don't pass up a five speed (NV4500) truck either. The six speed has a closer ratio box, but the overdrive is the same. The six speed is not a deal breaker compared to the 5 imo.

hey Rot box, what kind of mileage do you get with your 7.3??

I just pulled 18mpg on my last tank. Nothing like the constant 24mpg that my 12valve would get, but for a heavy truck with a V8 its not too bad in my book :)

Oops, that's what I meant. Ideal would be a 6-speed, but not a deal-breaker. Heck, I'm even ok with the right 12v cummins.

I'm worried I won't be able to afford an extended cab and I may have to get a single-cab.

Steve, have you considered much the 12v?? They are a bullet-proof motor that can get awesome mileage, and go forever when maintained right! (I have no personal experience with these, but have researching tow rigs myself, and I think I do want the 12v cummins!) The only draw back is that you can't get the extended cab with the 3rd or 4th (small) door.

yeah, I'm open to the 12v. I'm also open to a single-cab now. I'd honestly prefer an extended cab, but I can't afford to go into debt for this rig, so that really limits me. I've lowered the price on my taco, so now my budget is only about $13k, that really limits it.

I've gotta have a manual though. That's the one thing I'm insisting on. it sure slims down the pickings. I've got my eye on about 5 of them that I want to check out as soon as I sell my taco.
