Ok, think about this......

Sell the TJ and the truck. Pick up a JK, and live happily ever after.

While I'm not about to sell off my truck and trailer, I doubt now that my JK will ever see a trailer. Driving it to Moab was more comfortable than towing it down, not to mention about 1/2 the cost.

Appreciate all the comments and still thinking.

He still has the boat to tow. That would suck with a JK unless it had a hemi swap.

How big of a boat is it Bart?

A 4bt swap into your tow rig with some good tuning might fit your needs, but you could pick up an older PSD for the added cost.

Bart, you already know that I think you are very sharp when it comes to driving. Heck, I don't think that there is any one who can hold a candle to you when you get behind the wheel. So, please take what I am going to say with a grain of salt.

If you are thinking about re powering the truck then I would seriously think about getting rid of the truck and looking for another. Perhaps a newer LS series truck would be in order. Still gas powered, better fuel mileage, and more power while towing. It will not be a diesel but, it may be enough for you to get the job done. Head out to a few local dealers with your current truck and drive everything on the lot that you think may work. Test drives are free and who knows, you may be convinced to keep your current rig.

If you are serious about re powering your truck then you may be ahead if you consider a LS power plant. Big blocks are the old stand by but, it sounds like fuel mileage is a concern and no big block will give you enough mileage. Towing, unloaded, and driving off a cliff will only get you 10 mpg.

I am a huge fan of any modern turbo Diesel. I feel as though any of the big three offer a great product especially if you are willing to part ways with the warranty and delete the emissions. In Utah it sounds like that may not be an option though.

Thanks again, and I appreciate the input Rob. Good points and kind of the way I'm leaning.

Boat is a 25' Nordic with a big block so no go on a JK pulling it.

380hp 454 Mag. It's a 2000, just before they came out with the 502.

Upgrade the boat with a 502, put the boats 454 in the Chevy. Deal with the low MPG by knowing that you aren't paying for the higher cost of diesel and the higher maintenance costs. THEN, live happily ever after. :greg:

Hahahaha, yeah. For that price I could buy a pretty sweet Cummins.

trickle down affect...Reaganomics, that's how he said it would work but the boat is a greedy businessman who will keep both motors and the poor lowly truck wont get any thing.

how about a cummins in the chev, there are plenty of kits to do it.

when my 350 goes out in my 83 crew cab it will get a cummins swap with a manual trans.

I thought about that, but it was a $5k swap minimum. I ended up selling the Chev and getting a 99 Dodge V10. If that motor ever goes a Cummins swap will be a piece of cake.

We just finished a Cummins swap in a Exursion. Had a V-10 in it.

Pretty easy swap really once the trans controller was figured out.

And I think the engine was about $2500.00 then the kit was about another $2000.00 so ya your right there on the 5k guesstimate.

But what a nice rig to drive after.

Yeah, I hear the swap into a newer Ford isn't bad. I thought about putting one in my 01 SuperDuty, but the 7.3 ran too well to mess with it. They just didn't fit well into the 88 - 95ish Chevs very well. I know it can be done, just more expensive and time consuming than other swaps.
