NPLD 2011 - 5 Mile Pass Cleanup

There seemed to be less around 5 mile but the shooting areas to the west were quite messy, we filled my son's truck and several trailers in just one area.

So I decided not to go due to several factors, but heard from a few people today that trash was harder to find this year than in years past-- which is great news! That means that either a. less litterbugs are going out and/or b. more people are packing it out when they go out.

There was less at 5MP proper but there was absolutely no shortage of places to clean up and our only limiting factor to filling the dumpster 100% was simply resources. We had ~10 people cleaning a single shooting trash area and as Dave B mentioned, there are dozens of similar sites. I'm disappointed in you and U4, I'll save it for another thread but NPLD is unequivocally the best way for the ground level user to help save face and show force with our federal land managers (rather than ruin face like TBU) and our state association had little/no presence in marketing, organization and actual labor in Northern Utah. Jack J is a true access hero and I'm sure our southern Utah 'rocks' were representing as always, a trait that has been lost in the North.

We had 32 people sign up from RME, NAXJA, Cherokee Forum, Bush Eaters, and U4WDA.

That's great! Kudos to RME for consistently organizing and executing a successful NPLD project each year! RME is making a difference in protecting motorized access.

Oh.

We should be getting hundreds of people out to these, not just 20.

30+ is a respectable showing, but yes hundreds would be awesome. As a leader in the community, you could help get hundreds out to service projects by promoting the events and threads with the same enthusiasm you put into your noob runs, multiple build threads, and dirt bike threads.

Thanks to everyone who participated in NPLD and thanks to RME!

This is Jack. For those who don't know him, he is 81 years old. He came out the whole time and worked harder than I did. Thanks for your hard work and your good example Jack!

I'm doing my best. I've got to start slowly, or my enthusiasm will quickly burn out. In the past U4 promoted, advertised, and was a lot more involved in NLPD. I assumed they would do the same this year. If I had known the support was going to be so sparse, I would have done more personally to promote it. By the time I figured out how few people knew about it, it was too late to do much.

I'll continue to promote proper land use and education through the noob runs. The noob run may just look like a fun weekend on the outside, but I believe it did more to promote responsible land use and proper stewardship than any other event I've been involved with (thanks to the great teachers/volunteers.) We will be continuing the noob runs, and hopefully that will spark some new ways to fight the good fight.

I'm continually trying to find my place in the 4x4 community and know how I can make the biggest impact for good. I appreciate the suggestions and constructive feedback. Meeting Jack was a huge inspiration to me. I am starting to gain more enthusiasm and learn how I can do more than just writing my representatives and donating money to foundations. It's all new territory to me, but I'm learning as I go. I will definitely do more personally to promote this event next year.

Maybe in the future we could be a bit more strategic as well. I think a few people ended up running snakes and looking for trash along the way. Fortunately those trails are pretty clean.

Maybe in the future we could have maps with general areas highlighted for people to go to. I didn't know about the shooting area 'till Kurt showed it to me. I assume there are many more places around there that I don't know about that could use lots of hands. I think it's a great event, and I only want to see it grow in size and effectiveness. A HUGE thanks to all who helped.

There is and always will be room for improvement but let's not get too side tracked from the fact that RME and other clubs throughout the state did a kick ass job! Let's remember this enthusiasm in May next year when its time to plan NPLD 2012

I would love to have some planning & organizational help Steve. In years past I have asked the BLM management for specific areas they would like us to target with the cleanup and we were given nothing. Having someone that was local and willing to put in a bit of foot work a couple weeks before NPLD and create a specific plan would really help improve our effectiveness.

For me coming up from CO, I don't have the time to drive out there, scout out the areas that need attention the most and draw it out on a map. I do love the idea and if you're willing to carry thru, I would be glad to have your assistance being better prepared next year.

To be honest with you and as you've heard in this thread, there wasn't near the amount of trash in the main parking area and places close to 5MP. This year was the first time it's been like that... there has always been plenty of work to be done in the main parking area and surrounding sites. I was surprised at that and it kind of caught me off guard.

We went thru 90 garbage bags and we nearly ran out... that's a first for NPLD @ 5 Mile Pass. Next year I'll bring more bags! The dumpster was probably over 3/4 full, when in years past it's usually overflowing at the end of the day.

I'll get some pics posted in a bit.... and our turnout ended up being more like 35, with a few folks stopping by after most of the others had left.

Thanks to everyone that came out and worked hard to cleanup 5 Mile Pass!! You guys all made a difference and it's really starting to show out there!

I agree with it becoming more organized. I hit the south side of the highway where few people were. I would have happily cleaned up later had I known where the shooting areas were.

you got it. I'd be happy to grab a group of guys and scout out potential areas with lots of trash. It's great news that there's less trash out there each year.

We didn't get out to 5mile but we did organize our own cleanup with our dirtbiking group down in Richfield.
(Here's my friend and his dog... he is really good at sniffing out trash that has food in it)
