Old people

As most of you know, I manage a retail store here in Moab. This is the only department store in about 100 miles. Our prices are based on a national average, not the infalted "Moab" price.
Every Monday is Senior discount day when we offer 15% off to all customers 55 and older. We are the only store in the the area (to my knoweldge) that offers a discount to seniors.
It never fails.... every monday, some old lady has to bitch me out over something. When did people get entilted for growing old.
Today it was an old lady that was upset because there were 4 people in here line. I heard over the intercom the cashier call for a second cashier, and about 10 seconds later call for a third cashier. Then about a minute later they call me to the front. This old lady procedes to yell at me for not having enough registers running, when there are 2 open with no waiting. She complaines that because she is a senior her time is more precious than others so I should staff all registers all day regardless of need.
I explained to here, that we call for additional cashiers when the line gets to be more than 2 people, that the 1st cashier had done exactly that, and that I could staff every register all the time, but then i would also have to hire additional employees to cover the positions of all the people standing around on the registers. That would cost me more money, so I would have to do away with things like senior discounts, or infalte my prices to the "moab" price.
I asked her wich she would rather have, lower prices and a discount day and have to wait a minute or two longer while additional cashiers are called as needed, or have no discount and pay higher prices.
I might as well have slapped the old lady in the face, for the look that she gave me. How dare I suggest that all seniors were not entilted to a discount for being old.

Ok... I am done ranting now.
I feel better.

Your times gonna come, it will be your turn to be old. Sooner than you can imagine.

Your the old lady that was complaining huh! I would hire a super old person to talk crap to the seniors that way they can't b!tch because it comes from one of their own

Why should I stand in line 20 minutes, to spend 5 minutes giving YOU my money? I wonder why internet shopping is taking off so fast......

Face it, poor customer service sucks and we've all been through it. If every teller was busy, then you're just busy. But when I go to a place with a 20 minute wait, with half the check stands closed? That's poor service, and I don't return.

I agree that waiting sucks and that if you have to wait while checkstands are closed that is even worse. But in less that 2 minutes we went from 1 checker with a line to 3 checkers and no lines, how much more efficent (sp) can we get? If I had a magic ball to tell me exactly when more than 2 people are going to arrive at the front at the same time... then I would use it. And If you know of a better system, I will absolutly listen to suggestions.
I mean that while this lady that "talking" to me, I had 1 cashier standing there waiting to help her. Her problem was solved before I even got there.

Any way... Telling me off for not enough cashiers was not what upset me. It was the fact that she told me that because she was a senior her time was more precious that anyone elses.

I find that better than half the time the slow moving checkout line is caused by the idiot who is buying something. You know the kind, those who weren't aware they needed a method of payment until well after they are presented with the total.

People that still pay with checks piss me off......especially when they don't even bother getting it filled out till the cashier is done ringing up their items.

What you really want to say is, "If your time is so DAMN valuble then why are you standing here arguing with me over waisted time?!!"
Tell her to call ahead next time and you will personally be waiting to check her out and speed her on her way when she is done shopping! He He
I have found that most of the time when someone is like that, they have had something else set them off, (bill collecter, car accident, bad headache) and they need someone to take out their frustration on. She ranted on you, you ranted on us! Rant all you want, we are here for you!
Give her a Card that says "We are sorry for any inconvience you may have suffered as a result of poor service from our store. Please use this card on your next visit to recieve a 16% discount off any mechandise in the store. (valid Mondays only, between 1:36pm and 1:39pm) Thank you for your business, Please call again soon!"

anyone miss this part?:

when there are 2 open with no waiting

I would have asked why she didn't move her cranky old ass to an open line if she was so pressed for time. Options, lady!

But, I don't go to stores anymore unless I have to. The internet RULES!

I am seriously considering writing a book about how the AARP has ruined America.

Examples: it is ILLEGAL to discriminate against people over 50 based on their age, but it is LEGAL to discriminate against people UNDER 50 because of their age.
If you have a 70 year old and a 19 year old applying for a delivery position which requires heavly lifting, you almost have to hire the 70 year old (and remember, age, and all things related thereto can NOT be a factor used against hiring the 70 year old).

Another: In Pittsburgh, property values were re-assessed in 2002 for all houses EXCEPT for houses belonging to Senior Citizens. Their property values are based on 1975 values. The explanation: old people owned the houses longer, and shouldn't have to pay as much.

The AARP won't let important changes occur (social security) which will save our country in the future, because they (in their own words) "are not concerned about the rising generations, only those people over 50."

Finally, I think that old people should be prohibited from owning and/or driving vehicles over 15' long.
WHY in the name of all that's holy do old people INSIST on driving BOATS (Crown Victoria, MASSIVE Caddy's or Oldsmobiles, etc . . .).

I saw some old grandma driving a Crown Vic yesterday. I kid you not, she could NOT see over the steering wheel. She looked THROUGH it.
My grandma used to drive a huge Olds. We talked her into trading it in for an Accord EX.
She LOVES it!
Of course, now she drives a '95 Accord EX with 14,000 miles on it . . .

I understand that old people are still people (my parents are 70 after all), but an essential part of life is UNDERSTANDING OUR LIMITATIONS.

Done.
