Little update.

Well not much to update but a little. Right now we are working on getting the motor mounted in. How the hell did they fit a V8 in there. We put it in and just about welded the motor mounts in when we decided to check where the grill would set. Well there is about 2 inches between the fan and the grill. Where the hell am I supposed to put the radiator???:-\ So now we have to see if we can slide it back a little more:mad2:. Any suggestions on how I can make this work would be nice..

Your scout had the radiator mounted back about a foot further back due to it having a 4 cylinder in it originally(?) The battery was between the radiator and the grill. Mine came w/ the 304 so the radiator is up against the grill. Those that have done what you are trying have moved the radiator all the way up behind the grill I think.

Here are pics of mine after I rolled (thats why there is no fan in the pic) I had to pull the radiator and pull the front end forward.

Take off your belt-driven fan and use an electric fan. Ford Taurus 2-speed fans are cheap, and have treated me very well in the past.

So we got the motor mounted in on Saturday, and wouldn't you know it PLENTY of room for the radiator.

We used the original motor mounts off of the motor but had to trim them down to make them fit. Then we welded them in place. We still need to do some reenforcment but it is in and where we want it.

We welded a new cross member on the front and cut all of the old 4 cyl crap out.

Quick update. Last weekend We got the old axles and cut all the old springs and mounts out. So right now it sit on blocks as a bear frame and motor. I am still trying to decide which axles to use. The 44's are bone stock and the others are locked, geared, and I found out they have Chromoly axles. So right now I am leaning towards the Dana 30 and AMC 20. We also build a twin stick kit for my t-case and got it all mounted. So the Motor is completely mounted and next week we are going to try to start it.

Bad situation turned good

So I went to brigham to work on the scout this weekend. I got a little done but not as much as I wanted. I welded the rear bumper on ground all the torch cut on my spring perches off. Stated to pull all the emissions crap off my manifolds and wouldn't you know it I cracked one of them. So I was pretty pissed off at myself I went up to my uncles place (he has put a couple 360 with headers in his jeeps) thinking he might have one he pulled off. He didn't but he did have a set of in frame headers from a wagoneer that wouldn't fit his CJ. So now they are going onto the scout and they fit great. Then I started to tare down the motor. I pulled all the rubber, the fan and all the up front junk. Pulled the valve covers and the oil pan. I am going to sand plast what I can and get the rest as clean as I can then paint the motor so that it looks all new and stuff. Well thats the update for now. Pics to follow.

My wife says I'm indecisive!!

So I've got my mind rolling again. I've got this SF 14 bolt axle listed in the classifieds. Well I am now stiring with the idea of keeping it and selling my 44's and getting a full width front 44 or 60. My problem is I really want to be able to keep it street legal. How much wider will it be? I am going to have to get tires and wheels anyways so it wouldn't be a big deal to go to 8 lugs. Please give me your thoughts.

i run full sizes under my jeep with 38X15.5X16.5R TSL's on a 16.5X12 rim with a 4.75" offset and i only have half my tire covered by 6" flares and no one ever gives me crud bout it. heck i still hold 75 mph in it (kinda scarey though with the jimmy-rigged steering for now) but dang good luck man! looks like a good build!

Thanks for the input guys.

The biggest thing I was worried about was being street legal, but I have seen some pretty cool ideas on some removable flares. Needless to say I have decided to go with the full width, but not the sf 14. Over the weekend we were going through the axle pile and low and behold I found a Dana 60 out of a '89 dodge 3/4 HD we used to have (on the farm we run the trucks into the ground then pull parts for later use). My uncle is replacing the full width 44 in his FJ60 and is going to let me have it for next to nothing, or maybe nothing period :D. Now I just need to match gears and weld up the springs. Then the plan is to pull the motor, reinforce the mounts, blast and paint the frame, paint the engine, put the motor back in, throw a tarp over it and go to work on the body.

No turning back now!!

Last post I decided to go with the full width axles, one problem was I had no tires and wheels for the 8 lug. I had every thing for the 5 but want the extra width. Today I bought a set of wheels for it :D. Now I just need to start saving for some tires to put on them :(. Here is the wheel. I wondered if it looked to nice to put on a wheeler but decided the price was right. Now I just need to sale my scout axles so I can pay them off.

So for an update on the slowest build ever. I finally got the axles mounted:thumbs: go me. Now i have to get my house sold so I can move on to the next step. Next is get the motor pulled reinforce the motor mounts, blast and paint the frame, put the motor back, throw a tarp over it and go to work on the body. The next couple weekends will be focused on getting the house ready to sell (renters move out Tuesday, last time I was inside I about shit myself it was destroyed). After it sells I will be able to dedicate at least 2 weekends a month til its done. Wish me luck!!
