More info here:

Basically their fee structure blows everybody out of the water.
You either pay for it (1Gb speed) and waive the construction fee, or you pay the fee up front, only $300 and get internet for free 5/Mb for the rest of the time.
I'm jealous... google plaid speed.

what is so special about google fiber? the one time cost? or is it suppose to be crazy fast?

You can get gigabit internet speeds for $70 a month. Yes, the same speed you have on a hard wired connection can be your internet speed.

It's not the same thing as Utopia, unless you mean isn't it fiber like Utopia. If that's what you mean, then yes it is fiber. Utopia is a huge failure. My hope is that Google will come in a take over the Utopia infrastructure and do what Utopia will never be able to do...finish their network. I've got empty Utopia conduit in my front yard, but as long as Utopia is at the helm, I'll never actually have fiber in that conduit.

Tin foil hat time :D Google is not a search company as many would believe, google is a data gathering company (prove me wrong). Why else would google give you free email? Free OSes? Free online apps? etc. So what do you think they will do when they are now controlling (and able to monitor) every bit of your internet traffic? :spork: :p

Agreed. In a way, it is actually pretty scary. They claim they value your piracy, but next time you log into your gmail account, take a look at all the nice "customized" ads they display at the top. How did they know I was looking at such and such... etc... well, because they scan your email. I believe you can actually turn off the customize ads in the setting, which again hits at the grand privacy invasion and data mining they do. Don't get me wrong, I like google and their services, just keep in mind you pretty much give up your privacy when using them.

Yes, but just IMAGINE how it'd be if we moved into the 20th century! The possibilities! :D

I've said this before. I like Google, but I'm not a huge fan of the little googly tentacles wriggling their way into every facet of my life.

Don't you have to go out and point your 8 foot satellite dish at something to get internet in Magna?

Our connection just got bumped up to 55Mb from 35Mb this last week. I'm guessing Comcast is trying to keep customers happy because they know people will drop them like flies when google enters the arena. Same thing is happening near other google fiber projects. Competition is good.
