I have an 85 toy pickup lifted 4'' on 33's. im wanting to go up in tire size but my 4banger is having a hard time with the 33s. I was thinking of going with 35s and maybe even bigger down the road. so i was thinking about going with 5.29 gears. what do you guys think? and also what are some good shops in or around ogden that could do the install for me? I did search but i couldnt find any info on local shops.

do you have a ball park estimate on how much they would charge if i brought them the 3rd members (front and rear) with the new gears?

A few years back it was around 200.00 each but that was with non third axles. It is usually cheaper to bring just the thirds in. Give them a call for a quote. They also have gears in stock.

IF you are planning on 35's the 5.29's are perfect, if your are thinking of 37's, you better go 5.71's.
I had 37's with 5.29's & it wasnt very streetable at all,(much worse that 4.10 & 33")

this truck is my DD and will see much more on road than off road. and off road wont be anything super extreme. will 5.71 be ok for me? i've read that they arent as tuff as 5.21 and are more prone to breakage. and how will 5.71 be on 35s?

I just called six states and they charge $650 for labor if i bring them my two 3rd members fyi.

Shoot for that price you might as well order two of these for 949.00 each and sell off or keep your thirds for spares plus you would get a Detroit locker to boot. For street only I wouldn't get the spool but that is a sweet deal for 599.00 since you will be into it that much when you buy the gears for 180.00 each plus the install kits. Maybe find out if the have open carrier ones for sale.

I have a 89 toy with Yukon 5.29 and BFG 35" mud terrains. I would not gear lower than 5.29 if you plan on driving on the freeway. I find myself wanting a sixth gear. The 5.71 are also drastically weaker. If you ever plan to go to 37" tires just plan on some hard core engine upgrades. I do love the sound of blow off valves.

5.29's and six states.

Back when I had 4.10's I could get to and maintain 70 mph just fine on 33's. Now I have 5.29's and the same tires and I still maintain 70 mph just fine, but it is a lot easier to get there. I am at a higher RPM and don't like to stay there for too long, so it is driven less often on the freeway. It is a give and take.

IMO 35's and 37's are just fine with 5.29's.
actually 33's work well with 4.88's

Here is a little image I found regarding this.

Every shop I know of is about that price. I did my own gears due to how expensive the shops charge. It was alot of work!!!!!! I also would not go higher than the 5.29's IMO. I have 4.88 in my 4 cyl jeep, but it is only off road with full widths. My top speed isnt over 40 MPH!!!

My buddies have a shop up in Idaho Falls called Casper Customs. He is actually a vendor on this site.

I live in Clinton but i have been doing a ton of work in Idaho and will travelling up there and back a lot in the next few months.

I just talked to them and they charge 225 per axle if they just have the 3rd member and you are using new bearings. Its about 250 if you want to reuse the old bearings (more work)

I would be happy to deliver the 3rds both directions for you since Im travelling that way anyways.

Eric is a master at Toyota gears. All gears for that matter.

If this is your daily driver I wouldnt go lower than 5.29s. Thats pretty dang low

If you are interested in letting them do the gears for you let me know.

I have 5.29's and 33's and it is ok. When I drive it to work I drive an 80 mile round trip commute. I'd rather ride my motorcycle, but it is just fine.

You can take mine for a spin if you want. Then you will get a preview of what it will be like.
