Recovery rig thoughts

Today was not as productive as I had hoped. I did get the brake lines hung, the perches tacked and that was it. I did end up ordering some shock mounts for the axle and a new psc steering box. That was the total day for Christine. Then I ended up stripping four tires and mounting new ones, put them on a vehicle, then four more stripped and mounted, and brakes on a chevy van and a tune up on another vehicle. Not what I had in mind of doing but, it needed to be done to keep the shop running smoothly.

So I some how missed this thread over the last year. Awesome build and it's coming along great. The first few pages made me miss wheeling in New Mexico and Texas.

What are your plans on fixing the sheet metal on the floor board? When you do this, post up the pics! I have holes in my blazer i need to patch up too and trying to get ideas. I like the spring hangers ya got! Sexy! Never seen those before! My dad had a old Chevy stepside before i was born. I love to look at the pics and slobbler all over them lol! I like yours a lot! Not many of those old Dodges around...

Thanks. Wheeling here is good/great. I usually go out of town to do some more serious wheeling.

For the floor boards they may have to wait until I come back from California. Honestly, they are not real high on my list of priorities. I still have a long way to go and the time is getting short.

Christine is just about ready to be shipped to Northern Utah this weekend. There is just not enough time for me to finish it and I am needing some serious help with her. The bumpers front and rear and a spare tire carrier will be built by ChestonScout. I am also slowly coming to the realization that I may not be able to pull this off in time. So, I believe that more stuff will be getting completed by him than I had originally thought. I am really excited as I have really just let him loose with the creative side of things and can't wait to see what he pulls off. It is gonna be wicked cool! I will update or maybe he can update as time allows. I am hoping to leave here on Thursday or Friday and be back home on Saturday some time. I have just been too far backlogged in the shop to really get anything done. Next week I am picking up a Hennesey Viper that may need some serious motor work. Projects like that always trump my own projects.

Figures, I am on my way to drop off Christine and I am stuck in the snow. I can't go forward, can't go back because the front wheels will lock up and I will loose control. Good times.

Wow, where did you have to back that far? Point of the Mountain near Lehi?

Yep, at least I think so. My sister in law lives off of exit 284 on I-15. That is the same exit you take to get to Cabela's. After a short while on the Tipanogas highway you turn North again across from the Smiths gas station. The road winds its way up and around the mountains for a while. Her turn off is about three or so miles up that mountain road. I think the road is four or so lanes wide and it is a little steep. I was doing fine and plowing my way through drifts that were a foot to a foot and a half deep and I slowly lost momentum. I was stuck so I could not go forward and backing was scary. I tried to go forward but, the tires started to spin and the truck and trailer would start to slide sideways towards the inside corner (on coming lane). I waited for four hours for a plow truck to show up and none ever did. I ended up backing down the whole way. I could not even use reverse as it would put power to the tires and I would start to slide. So, in neutral I wound my way down. What a trip.

That sounds like a hairy situation. I'm wondering why you didn't shout out here on RME. I was only 15 minutes from there and could have come out to help. User your resources man.

x2. If you're ever in a pickle, post up and usually someone on here will come to the rescue, especially if you're in Utah.

Thanks for the offers but, I really don't know what anyone could have done. I was about 18,000 lbs and some change and I don't think anyone could have moved me forward. I really only needed to get about another quarter to a half mile further and I would have been at my sister in laws house. Besides, I was stuck at about 0230 hours. At that hour it is just plain rude to get someone out to help.

Things I have learned on this last trip to Utah. First, everyone here drives like a pissed off teenager. If you do the speed limit heaven help you! I think I had kids in car seats flipping me off. I was also cut off by every driver that passed me. Second, I will call it the Utah lifted truck syndrome. Everyone has their lifted HD truck and has them on wider tires. When they drive them in the snow they are just all over the road. I could not believe my eyes. Those wide tires really are not very good in the snow. Even with the snow packed roads and driving winds I had some folks pass me and then cut me off. Here in New Mexico we have folks like that also but, we have them all live in one town. Santa Fe.

Bwaahaaahaaa!! So true, love the summary of Utah drivers. My wife hates it when we go up to Utah to visit, I become a very aggressive driver... when I'm not normally that way.

And I love going to CO, where the drivers and people are courteous. Utah earns its reputation for terrible drivers.

LT you nailed. Too funny.

Thanks y'all. I was truly floored by everyone and their driving style. As of now I am looking into new tires for the dually. In the last three months I have had three occasions where I have cussed at my current tires. I have to remember though that this is a tow rig, not an off road rig and that leads me to my current problem. Do I need to look at the 19.5" wheels and tires or, should I keep my 17's and look for new tires? Not too sure what to do here.
