reverse rotation drill bits??????

ok don't ask me how but my son broke all 3 of the motor mount bolts on his xj... I tried to drill one of them so i could put a extractor in it but no dice... so someone suggested a reverse rotation drill bit... I read a few articles and it seems they are a better method to get a broken stud out...

So here is the question... where can I get one... or does anyone have a set?

Lots of places have them. Look for them under the name screw extractor sets, or left handed drill bits....just be sure to hold the drill with your left hand as well! If you are home tomorrow I can drop my set off for you to use, on my way to Ogden.

On a side note, if the bolt is pretty tight, the left handed bit wont do much good. One tip I will give you is you must drill all the way through the bolt. Only going half way wont free it up, most of the time.

I feel for you I broke all of the bolts off too but when I went to put vise grips on the broken bolts they all were finger loose! I lucked out. I have had little luck with any type of extractor when I really need one, wd40 or chemical help would be an option. Are you able to see any of the threads?

I've had little success with left handed drills and screw extractors. I've had much more success welding a nut on top of the broken bolt and then using a wrench on the nut to unscrew it.

That's the one.^^

the bolt closest to the front is almost totally drilled thru and actually started to turn but just can't get anything to grip it to turn it... the middle bolt I broke a bit off in it but I think I can get it out... the back bolt is untouched due to I can;t get a drill up in there.

When the bolts broke the engine dropped and the motor mount put a hole in the bottom of the distributor and the oil filter... and with the engine laying on its side it has put the tranny in a position that will not shift into park which doesn;t allow the key to be removed from the steering column...

Its a mess and I just don't have the time to fix it until tomorrow or thursday....

seeing I never learned to weld that option is only if I can get someone to help me...

And Carl,... at 259 dollars for that new bracket... not in the finances right now...

My son had a similar thing happen to his comanche out at Simpson Springs. His cast motor mount bracket busted in half and sheared off the bolts in the block which allowed his motor to tip and puncture the oil filter. Luckily he stopped it before the engine seized. I had to extract the bolts from his block and have had to do the extraction many times on my son in laws XJ. I tried the reverse rotation bits and they work as long as you can get the drill in there. What I have had the best success with is welding on the end of the broken bolt so that I can get some vice grips on the bolt and walking it out. The heat from the welder also loosens up the thread locker that is usually on the bolts.

Be very careful with heating them up though. Make sure you have done all the drilling that you need to do before adding heat. Otherwise if you try to drill after heating, your bit wont touch it.

I'd get a set of easy-outs. Same basic idea as a left hand drill bit but you don't have to drill in as far, just enough that the easy-out can bite. Plus the easy-outs are much less likely to break-off compared to a drill bit. However, if you do break one off, good luck drilling it out :D

I do have two sets of easy outs and neither set has worked for me...
