rolled jeep...

What? Meat? Are you going to web recover this from the comfort of your chair at home? You're the man.

This is AWESOME...I would not even have thought you could do this sort of thing....

Seriously tho...I don't think you want to take anything as big as an Expedition up that stretch of road. It should be fine up to that point (other than the pinstriping)but at that point it has a pretty severe downhill pitch (which is why I slid off in the first place) and is very narrow, besides. Then again, I'm obviously not as skilled as you, and maybe with your rigs/tools/knowhow you'll be able to manage something.

Something else that has occurred to me, and someone may have already mentioned this, is that the trees in the area are pretty weak (all I remember seeing is scrub oak) and in the interest of not tearing things up we might not want to, or even be able to use those for an anchor for a snatch block. I agree that we want to pull it out the way it went in, as that is also the shortest route back to the trail. If anyone has a ground anchor that they could offer, we might have a lot more success anchoring a snatch block to that, than to anything else there.

Of course...any knowledge I have about this is based on high school physics class, and a little bit of industrial experience, rather than any recovery application experience...so for what it's worth.

Now, back to the experts

i would be willing to help, have pull-pal, earth-anchor and plenty of recovery gear, however i would want affirmation the the city/county have authorized the trespass and recovery.

Saturday is better for me, but depending on the time I could probably make it Sunday.

I talked to the city today, and I am concerned that they are not getting all the right information about the situation. If they are reading the news, they are bound to have all kinds of wild ideas about what the recovery will require. I believe that two dudes in a jeep, with a winch, and maybe a couple of ground anchors could pull my liberty out of there and be on our way in short order. It sounds like they are thinking that they need to send people in there so that they can be sure to "minimize the impact". The only problem is that they don't really have anyone to send. Meanwhile, I have a list of people with the right equipment who are just waiting to go help.

I know this is all my own fault....but this is very frustrating.

What 'news' are they reading? Tell them satisfaction guarunteed with the RME crew ;) We are environmentalists too... Who love 4x4's...

I talked to the officer who picked me up Tuesday night, and I think we made some progress to a resolution. I am hopeful that clearance to go up will be obtained this evening, and possibly head up there tomorrow sometime, or maybe Saturday at the latest. One thing is quite clear, and that is that it will need to be done with as few vehicles as possible, and might have to have one of the city personnel along, too.

Even so, I wouldn't head up there with any less than 3 well equipped rigs, with winches and land anchors, straps, etc.... You can always not use one, but if you get up there and don't have enough help, you'll be planning another trip in.

Bart's got a good point.. It'd be bad to have a large party with a gaggle of rigs and spectators, and bad to go ill prepared.. but a well equipped crew with enough well equipped vehicles is a must..

if this goes down on either friday or saturday I will not be able to attend so in that case Cody might be the best equiped to handle it saturday.... so lets make some plans on who can go when and what they have so if need me we can have a few well equipped rigs ready...

I can always loan my straps and snatch blocks to someone to use the next two day...

I think the biggest thing that we need to have ready is Kurts pull-pal.... that is the one item that I see being the deal breaker.....

Dave,
Let them know that a number of us have not only done these type of extractions before but have worked with land managers FS BLM to minimize impact in sensitive areas in doing so. Saturday is bad since a number of us are committed as leaders for the State Association Convention Kurt, Meat and myself to name a few. I am not sure who else has the expertise and experience that are not involved with the convention but I for one am pretty flexible and could be available Friday. Kurt? Then I would bet this has already gone to phone stage.
