Other Region Rubicon 2021

In 2020 I crossed a few trails and goals off my bucket list. For 2021 I want to cross another trail off; I want to run the Rubicon.

I am planning on running the trail in July or August. I am opening the invite here in the event some of you want to go too. I need to get dates on the calendar in Jan/Feb to ensure the time off and to force me to be ready and actually go.

Anyone want in? I do want to keep the group size relatively small, but would love to have someone along that has run the trail before.

That was just done last week. I installed a new TR, DL, new ends, RCV axles, and will soon be installing a Part-Time kit with 3.1 low range and 10% underdrive high range gears.

The last thing to do after the tcase work is to get 37's.

Is all that necessary for this trial? Having never ran it I have no idea. I've seen plenty of nasty pictures, but I just assumed they were optional lines. Is the fear of breakage mostly because of nasty rock crawling, or just general middle of nowhere break downs?

Its 22 miles of massive, gnarly Granite boulders and the traction isn't great. Its hard on parts, for sure.

I think most of us had bent steering parts after that trail. OK, half of us. I had just upgraded my tierod before the trip and brought my old one as a spare. I gave it to Todd so he could drive home to Vegas.

Would love to make the trip. We have a few friends that live in Georgetown, close to the trail. Put us down for the trip. We'll take our TJ on the trail. I just need to figure out camping & parking; we'll trailer the jeep.

Planning on camping on the trail?

I've never done it, but I have read about it and know that I don't want my rig at less than 100% if possible.
As you pointed out, here are my reasons for upgrading:
1. It is a long way from home if I break
2. The trail is in CA, so if I break, its going to be expensive
3. It's a rough, rock crawling trail, bypasses or not, and can be hard on the truck

I know folks have taken less built rigs through without issue. I just want my POS to be in as good of shape as I can get it for the 3 reasons above.

My recent upgrades were needed for other reasons beyond just the Rubicon. I had an axle going out, a bent tie rod, and a few other issues. I pulled the trigger on the low and high range gears because I want them and if I am doing the part time kit (mostly to extend the quiet operation of my new axles) and opening the tcase, why not.

Yes, my plan is to camp along the trail.

Dave, I'm definitely interested and following. Circumstances are such that I can't say anything for sure about that time frame though. But if my situation works out that I can, I'd like to. I have done it once before, five or six years ago.

I'd be driving the LJ there, and Lord willing and the creek don't rise, driving it back. The first time I did it, was as part of a larger trip, that included some ghost towns in Nevada, Mono Lake, Bodie, Yosemite and Bristle cone. Ended up close to 2,000 miles round trip in the LJ.

I am open to Sept dates too if that helps. I just know if I don't plan it and get the time on the calendar, I won't go.
