Should I?

buy a YJ. its got a frame vs. a unibody. its got leafs so its super easy to upgrade and pretty fool proof. keep it low, slap some axles under it and wheel the piss out of it. as the body gets bashed in, put some skins on it. it'll morph from street legal jeep to trailered buggy alot easier than an XJ.

Your JK is super capable AND street legal.... I can vouch for a YJ project though! Removable top and windshield are key to their preservation when wheeling the piss out of it, easy to make room for big tires without major lift. Plus the injected 4.0 is a solid motor to start with(except for sand and hills/headwinds on the highway at freeway speed). I've had 5 jeeps(CJ5, 87YJ, 92YJ, 95ZJ, 97TJ), my 92 YJ has been my favorite since the day I brought it home so my opinion is probably biased
 
I second the budget build YJ idea, from experience I can say that it gets expensive to take an XJ or ZJ beyond 33's. The cycle is usually guys will make the jump to 35's, get anxious and roll it, and then end up either trying to buggy the unibody or build a buggy with a real frame using their existing drive train parts.
 
I'm agreeing with everybody that's saying build a buggy. If you know you're going there eventually, why mess around with a middle step that you're going to lose time and money on when it doesn't make you happy either?
 
Well I'm glad I could entertain you Bart. I pretty much knew the idea of the XJ was just a crazy idea to begin with which is why this is in chit chat.

I think the real reason for this is, I've been gone for two months now. No wheeling for two months and I have at least four more to go and I'm going crazy. The wheels always get spinning in my head when I get deployed, usually I just need people to talk some sense into me and get the crazy out of my head. This will probably only get worse the longer I am here.
 
I have a built YJ and I enjoy wheeling the JK more if you want a buggy/YJ just buy mine!!!

In all seriousness I have built XJs (I am doing one right now) They are not good for hardcore rigs no matter how you look at it, sure you can do unibody stiffeners and a long arm kit and have a ball but in a matter of 5 years the unibody is cracking and almost useless in no time.

And one more thing..............................UNIBODIES BLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
hm... maybe we could channel your boredom in a less destructive manner... :D

Maybe get some maps and map out some new routes you'd like to take. Or put a "wanted" ad out there that you'd looking to help people brainstorm their designs for their rigs. Maybe they could send you what they're working on and you could help them research the best solution.

For example, I need help researching the following:

- ARB tent mounting dimensions
- 5speed radiator swap into a tacoma, removal of auto trans radiator/cooler

I'm just trying to help you, there is no selfish motive here. ;)

Or design your buggy all out on paper so when the time does come you'll know what you want.
 
Not so much entertaining as it is identifying the thoughts I go through on a regular basis, sans the XJ these days. Kind of why I've been toying with the idea of finding a JKU and dropping full widths and a 5.3 in it to use for a tow rig for the buggy. See, you're not the only one with out-of-the-box ideas.
 
I'm thinking I am going to start jotting down the ideas that do pop into my head for a buggy and eventually come up with a "plan" there are so many different options out there but luckily I'm not a horsepower junky on the rocks so I won't need anything more than deep gears and a four banger.

I will give you this though, I am finding it diffcult to find usable info on a home brew rack for your RTT. Would be easier for me to come up with something like that with the truck and tent in front of me.
 
I think the toughest part about designing a buggy would be actually deciding on what parts/configuration you'd want. If I were to build one, i'd do one exactly like Addicted Offroad's buggy: Lexus 4.0 v8, fj80 axles, duals, lightweight, linked, and small.

It's a bitch ain't it? I share your pain lol, I've dropped a lot of cash on stuff when I got back from deployments for this same reason. You generally are sitting around left with nothing but your thoughts for 10 hours a day........
 
Earlier I even started kicking around the idea of a Firebird for the wife again. 5.3L/4160E make it nice, reliable and fast enough. The Firebird idea came up last time I was deployed but never happened. I think I just need a project that motivates me. Not that the Jeep doesn't motivate me, in fact I think having the Jeep as it is with another project to put my time and money into would keep me more motivated.
 
I love building rigs in my head. I am faster, more talented, and the rig is more capable in my mind. Mind scape wheeling is the best!

When I actually get into the project I remember reality ;-)
