If you know your going to end up with a buggy thats where I would focus, and save for. If your not going to end up with a buggy an XJ or a ZJ is a great direction to go, yes they are unibody but you can plate it, and next time you find a $300 XJ body laying around find a place to hide it in the back yard so down the road when the doors no longer shut you can swap it out in a weekend.

Have you seen this IBEX buggy in a box? It was featured on Extreme 4x4 last weekend. All you need is a welder and a few hand tools. The most intimidating part of a buggy, for me, would be the design and tube bending - and this virtually eliminates that.

I think it'd be cool to have a ROC like the F-toys, where everyone is in the same rig and it all comes down to driving skill at that point. Maybe its own class at KOH, with super strict rules.

Maybe you could build a buggy out of a yj with one tons.. You've probably seen this but seems like a cheap start to me.

Not a huge fan of YJ's, I'd have to stretch it and do a CJ front end swap to be happy with the way it looked.
