Funny you say this. I have considered myself a Libertarian since college 20 years ago. I've "thrown away my vote" in almost every election.

I do feel I am objective and take most news stories with a grain of salt. I look at what the media outlet is and adjust my belief of the story accordingly. I try not to watch major outlets, but also stay off social media (aside from forums) I love watching Bill Mahr (although I rarely agree with him) I generally like Tucker Carlson (again, I don't agree with him a lot) I can listen to what they say and know it is biased and adjust how I take it from there.

I find most of my friends & family are more liberal then I am...and that's ok. We can still talk. I am one of the few that can discuss politics without getting heated. I feel I always try to look at things with an open, objective mind as much as possible. I try an evaluate why someone would be claiming what they are, or doing what they are doing.

In this case, the past 4 years (more like the past 10) Trump has proven to be very arrogant and I can completely see why he'd believe the election was stolen....he can't believe he could lose. He has always blamed everyone else for things that have gone wrong. He praises people one minute but turns on them in a second and starts calling them names when they don't follow his will. He's proven that he is a sore loser and will always be this way. Those characteristics are not ones of a leader. He may have done a few good things in office (every president does, no matter how badly you disagree with their overall presidency) I just felt that Trump was way more of a liability to this country then an asset and so I held me nose and voted for the "lesser of 2 evils" this last election....AS I SAW IT.

To the point of realizing that not every person on the opposite side of the isle is some how out to destroy this country (no matter what side you are currently on) Just by voting for Biden, I've been called a socialist, communist, liberal and all kinds of other names on other boards, yet in turn, I don't look at people that voted for Trump as QAnon, racists, rednecks or any other way just because they voted for Trump. I will look at a few factors and THEN call them that :cody: 🤪X-D

Seriously though, as a nation, we need to start looking to middle of the isle as the meeting place and stop being pulled further and further to the outside isles where you can't reach the middle anymore.

I honestly hope the next 4 years, the Dems will be a little more scared at what occurred and will be more willing to reach toward the middle...but only time will tell.
You sound a lot like me, but I voted against massive gun control (Biden).

I think Trump, good or bad didn't play the good cop bad cop politics that is the status quo. He did what he wanted and could care less about the fallout. I like that in some aspects and that is why he was able to get a few things done.
I worry that the democratic party will follow that example, but with a career politician at the helm, which could end very badly. I have hope that we will return to the moderate level of incompetence in our politicians we are accustomed too.

I think, in general, the Democratic party is closer to center than Trump's Republican party. I think the rest of the Republicans are probably similarly distanced from center as the democrats. It will be interesting to see how they balance out going forward. The Republicans certainly need to find a less divided front moving forward or they will lose power and the balance will skew too far to the left.

I don't know what to do with the media's influence. The obvious answer is to teach and preach objectivity, but that's just not going to happen. Part of our culture is essentially told to trust and believe that those around you know what's best from a young age, and follow from a young age. I think media is weaponized to influence people like that, which I honestly thing is a healthy majority in this country.

Going into what Cody said. Give this a watch

I followed the advice given in this film a few months back and found my mental health has improved.

Try to keep myself informed my own way and stop the nonsense of influence.

This, 100%.
If we spend time fighting each other we won't focus on the real problems at the top.
You guys are not wrong on this one. This whole scenario is right out of the socialist/authoritarian play book. Doesn't matter if you support Trump or not, but he has been played by the left. It's not always a violent coup that takes down democracy. Socialist/Communist look for devision and begin to convince people that they are the better choice. President Trump, either intentionally or just with bad judgment, has continued to deepen the rift with half truths (or just outright lies at times) and rhetoric. He has fed into the media hype and led honest patriotic Americans down a very dangerous hole. I saw it mentioned earlier that people wonder how Nazis got into power? I've lived in Germany and have many german family friends. Most that where old enough to remember the war, or those that study german history, would tell you that it happened very much like this. Good people who were at an all time low after WW1 were promised a path to renewed glory and wealth. They were so blinded by the chance of recovering the power and national pride that they never even realized the horrors the Nazis were committing. Please understand that I'm not claiming that Trump or any other politicians in DC are as bad Hitler, just pointing out the process that allows this to happen. The country needs to wake up and realize that BOTH sides are playing a very dangerous game. Fan the flames and move in when the people are fighting amongst themselves. Dictator 101

I would say the biggest problem is not 'being played by the left'. It is the idea that all threats are or must be 'by the left.'

Seems like many people tolerated or ignored clear warning signs from Trump simply because they fear 'socialism'. If we look at dictators and wannabes from around the world they are every bit as likely to be far right as far left.

We should be very careful of those on the extremes of either side.

Can you give an example of a right wing conservative dictator? I may be totally living in my bias, but I can't think of any.

@Houndoc you are exactly correct. My personal view is that Trumps actions are by far the more immediate threat to our system. Honestly I dont believe that either party has the best interest of their constituents at heart. This is why I try to open peoples minds to third parties. Imagine a Congress where there were 3 or 4 parties with real representation. The fewer choices we have, the more possibility of abuse of power there is. (Keep in mind I share this as my personal view). I believe that there would be more inter party cooperation and that the people would be better represented. Phillip K Dick wrote a short story years ago (Amazon has adapted it to film called "Kill all others") which has the premise of the people being forced to "vote" for a single choice of a candidate. It's a good read or watch and with tensions so high right now it has some relevance.
