if you look for a 406 (very rare, I believe there are only 2 or 3 sets in the US, and very hard to find and when you do find them they are usually $$$) but they are about 7" narrower I believe...if you ask him nicely Daniel at Killer Axles might sell you his set, I almost bought them a while ago but decided I better not. He was going to let them go for a killer deal and was including the thirds from a 404...everything is the same on the 406s except the third is super long but the 404 third swaps right in, so you get cable lockers with them too.

mogs are sweet as long as they will work with your setup, the front diff is damn near centered so it can make it very interesting to run your front shaft. I am not sold on narrowing them, I think best results are had with stock setups...if you want them narrower then run 20s and super deep backspacing, stock brakes seem to work fine so the hub/disc brake conversions aren't too important at first...that would be an after thing on my list if I were to run them.

Arent both diffs offset by like only 3.5" or 4.5"? Could be hard to work with when placing an engine... unless you move the axle out way far ahead.

I dont know for sure but I am pretty sure they are about 7" off center so what ever that works out to...

From Exaxt FAQ's-

"Pinion offset (centerline) is offset approximately 3.75 inches from axle centerline (front on left, rear on right)."

:p

I've been doing a little research on Portals too.... for the future, ofcourse ;)

I am putting portals on my buggy. I dont get the axles till after EJS, but my set up is mog 404's, small block 350, turbo 400, hopefully atlas. If you have read on Pirate its basically 6's with those that hate them and those that love'em. I loved them on my 404 unimog and it was a heavy beast and i ran 40" tires on it. The only problem i had was that mine leaked out on the portal box. I will post up some pics as soon as i get mine.

Ok,, So what are the biggest draw backs of running portals?
Weight?

weight yes, plus the pinion is super long, they do tend to break as suka said (this can be taken care of but a few things have to be addressed)...
