weight yes, plus the pinion is super long, they do tend to break as suka said (this can be taken care of but a few things have to be addressed)...

ok???

So are they not worth running VS. a 60 and 14 bolt?

I like the ground clearence issue ;)

60's everone in competion, are winning on 60's your 9" axles. no win's on portal to date.

yep, if you are worried about ground clearance I would run some 40 spline 9" axles that are shaved for clearance...that would give you pretty good ground clearance and save you a lot of weight...or do mog9s...that way the pinion length is no longer an issue nor is the pinion placement...mogs are a sweet idea but I am by no means ssaold on them as a replacement axle for the 1 ton gear...especially if you already have the 1 ton gear setup with gears and lockers...

...unless you want to count Ken Blume, he's been doing REALLY well in Erocc and not too badly at UROC. He's using Volvo portal axles. (he's still broken some stuff from time to time)

the volvo portal are something I want to watch, ORGS has now come out with new gears for them...I have heard they are also coming up with a 100% new volvo axle...the volvos are lighter but they are also said to be weaker and they are very spendy (not uncommon to spend $5k or more on them)

on one or a pair?

its a good deal if you find a pair for $5K...usually you will spend 7K-10K for a pair that are totally gone through and rebuilt...(I believe these numbers are still pretty accurate, its been a while since I did any kind of looking into volvo axles)

Not too long ago, I read this: "Exotic=$$/PIA"
so far I don't see enough advantage over the 60 14 bolt setup to want to run them. as far as clearance... Shawn, you just need to learn how to drive.

These are my axles that I have for sale. I do have 3 sets available...thats 3 sets Front and Rear. I NEED to dump them ASAP.
Not here to hijack the thread, but I do have a TON of info on these, parts availability, Spicer numbers for U-joints, disc brake conversions, OX lockers, birfield boots, etc, etc.
Please feel free to ask any and all questions on these. I have alot of great info.
If any one is interested, and it sounds like a few may be, I am looking to dump these for $3000 A SET, OBO. Thats front and rear, drum brakes, locked up, low gears.

Give me a call, shoot me an email, just let me know.
Again, sorry for the hijack, but I have a ton of info on these if anyone wants any.

how many of these broke axles came from a narrowed portal axle and how many were full width? Most of the broke axles I have seen have been narrowed!
I have only seen one pic of a 404 full width with broke portal box on PBB all the others have been narrowed, leave them stock and maybe you wont have that problem. Nothing is BOMBPROOF :)

Leave em stock in a compition and I like to see you clear the first 2 gates without hitting a cone... They are way to wide in stock form for comp use....
