Wheelin season is right around the corner and I want to make the old Goat a bit better, quieter and more reliable. I started with replacing the 15 gallon fuel cell and it's external fuel pump with the
Goat Built 18 gallon fuel cell that takes a factory GM truck internal fuel pump and sending unit. I needed to figure out the fuel cell location, cut out the old mounts, weld up the new mount and space everything so it all works together.
Here's what it looked like to start with... quite the mess.
With the fuel cell change, I decided to relocate transmission cooler. It was mounted horizontally behind the fuel cell with it's own fan and created a lot of noise and heat. When I first got it, I added a piece of sheetmetal to redirect the heat and reduce the noise from the passenger area. I'm going to run a smaller cooler and relocate it in front of the radiator. I do want to upgrade the fan (again) to the
Delta PAG that
@Bart mentioned in another thread about relocating the trans cooler. I welded up the fuel cell mount on my setup table, then
covered it with Seymour Stainless paint.
I also needed to fill in the holes in the floor out back, reorganize my storage layout and make a permanent mount for a Milwaukee Packout lunchbox cooler. Another big job was removing the leftover rear winch mount, built out of thick plate steel. There was a bunch of cleanup needed out back.
I've been running a Milwaukee Packout for tools, parts and oils, but with moving the trans cooler I can lower it down a good 8". I like having the Packouts for secure storage and an easily removable option. I left a cutout around the center-rear sheetmetal for a soft shackle mount, for recoveries.
I also capped off the rear 'bumper' ends that were wide open before. Its been a ton of grinding, cutting and welding and I've made quite the mess... but it's starting to come together.
Here's what it should look like with the Goat Built fuel cell, Packout and Lunch box. Lower COG, better securement and a nice fuel supply upgrade!
