Went out in the jeep for a drive after work yesterday to do some exploring in my new backyard. There are a lot trails and areas to go to in this area!

We were able to get very high up on the trail (almost to the trail summit it seems) but the snow pack stopped us from continueing. If I had been in the buggy, we would have kept going right over the snow. :D

With the help of Google Earth, I have an arial shot and outline of where we went. It is beautiful up there!

On to the pics:

Here is the arial shot with a quick outline I drew over the top

Early on the trail, we came across this view. Picture doesn't do it justice... the avalanche took out Hundreds of very large trees.

Snow pack in the Valley below Mine site #1

This is really cool. The water coming out of the mountain is running underneath the snow pack, and it goes DEEP down in there.

Picture doesn't do it justice. From this p.o.v. the water drops about 20 - 30ft

View of the snow pack in the valley. There is a powerful stream of water under there somewhere

Large I6 engine just below the mine site. The whole thing was longer than the jeep and almost half as tall. I assume it was used to run the mine shafts. This thing is massive... could probably kill rockwells. :p

Back on the trail, heading upward :D

The white on the ground is not snow... it's all rock. I'm assuming it's gypsum...? I need to pull out the old mineral book again. But it's everywhere.

And here is where our trail ended. I'm thinking I would have been able to continue in my buggy. Maybe next time. :)

Snake Creek

The mine you have shown is the Steamboat Tunnel...

Water was tapped up Snake Creek, piped down to the flume and powerhouse (near the spot the pavement ends) and the power was transfered via Pole Line Pass to the Yankee Mines in Mary Ellen Gulch...

EZ knows alot about these mines, inside and out, I have a couple maps of the insides...

Great Pics!!! :greg:

Sweet compressor...

There is a very similar one at the bottom of Hey Joe Canyon in Moab... did that one have a name on it that you can remember?

Odd thing, the one at the bottom of Hey Joe is missing the head too

That was the most fun that I have had in a long time. The whole trip was so amazing and beautiful. Though, as soon as we almost reached the summit, there was a massive amout of mosqutios. I think that most of my legs and arms are covered in mosquito bites. I also did not know that colonys of ants tend to take over the aspen trees that we swiped on the trail. They apparently had no problems falling right into the jeep. I think at the end of the night those ants found a wonderful new home in the local car washes vacuum . :)
Next time we will not forget ot bring the OFF!! There are a lot of good camping spots along the way. Herzog has found so many trails that are right in our backyard to explore that I cant wait to get out and venture into real life a little more. :D :D

Awesome! I was hoping that you or somebody would chime in with names for the areas. Google Earth wouldn't produce the names, so I went with "unknown trail" :D

I got a couple pics of it. I didn't see a name stamp on it (I didn't look very hard) but I did snap a pic of the numbers.

The cylinder view has a quarter on it for size comparison.

Nice pics! I've done a bit of exploring up there. We called the main mine (where the little building and the engine were at) the Hauntavirus mine (because of the white fuzzy stuff growing on the walls inside.) It is one of the best mine explorations that I have been in......probly went back at least 2500 feet, and lots of cool stuff. Oh! That was the mine that had all the dynamite in it!!! And bags of explosives too. On another occasion I hiked all the way up the trail you were on to the ridge (was all alone and didn't want to get stuck trying to drive it.) It has a real deep rutted section just ahead of where you were stopped by the snow. If you go all the way to the top you can literally park on the ridge with your headlights pointed down at Brighton. Pretty neat. Let me know when you go next time.
