Nothing fancy, 401 AMC, new frame because the old rusted to about nothing and some new paint. Repair a lot of the rust. Other than that still pretty much the same. We are looking at a Moab trip in October if you are interested. Could be like older times you know.

Cool. I was hoping to head down to Moab in October too, so maybe I can get my truck reliable enough to make it down there. Wish I had a tow rig and a trailer, but I can rough it in the '81. Let me know as you get more details.

Steve I like the tunnel. Your rusted floor looks like ya mite wanna get a tetna shot before toching it, Lol.

You're not kidding, I should probably check my last tetanus. But the rust is so powdery I doubt it could ever cut me, it'd just crumble.

We did Forrest Lake for the first time on Sat., Wow that was a blast did it all in 2lo, mostly bcuz I sheared four bolts on the front Driveline just past the river and around the first bend. Dumb! but 2 lo was fine just took the easier lines. Any how looks good.

Forest Lake is a pretty fun trail. I wish there were some harder sections. After that first 1/10 of a mile it gets pretty simple. i didn't know your sami had enough torque/hp to shear driveline bolts! That's bragging rights for a sami

Mineral Basin is even more fun than Forest Lake. It's going to be a blast on the 10th.

Anyone want to build me some sliders in the next week? I'm thinking 2x3 1/4" with 3 legs each, something simple.

I just don't have time. If anyone's twiddling their thumbs and handy with a welder, I'd love some assistance.

I think I may have time to knock out my sliders before its maiden voyage. I don't want to be doing any trails with just 4 body mounts. So sliders might be a necessity by then. Which is ok, sliders are quick.

If I were in moab then Jeff would be building an exo for me. That would rock.

Got some stuff done tonight.

Cut out all the rust spots out of the floor:

Got rid of the passenger side body mount (it wasn't even close to connected on that side.)

Removed all the rubber coating with a chisel and hammer.

I should have the tunnel mostly finished by Thursday (I never thought the day would come), and I'll try to get the seats installed by then too. Then I'll prep the interior for herculiner. And I'll make sure I don't get any on my hootus.

Perfect fit!!!

Toyotabuild006-3.jpg

this is what you need!!

I would LOVE a pair of those. How are they without a headrest? I guess I"m not resting my head while I'm crawling, but I do on long drives.

This is the seat I'd really love:

But I need a few more of these first:

I'm using seam sealer for seam sealer (not trying to be a smart alec ,that's what it's called). It's at the auto-parts store. I'm sure there are types of silicone that would work fine, but this is actually meant for sealing body seams.

I found an old picture of it from my taco;

WHen you go to the auto parts store, nobody knows what it is, and they only have one bottle max (in my experience).

I can't wait to get down there, believe me. I've gotta make sure it can drive up AF Canyon before i take it to Moab though. I'd hate to be stranded in Helper, or green river, or wheverever, trying to drive it back home.

thanks for the compliments James. Considering I only have flux-core, I think I did a decent job. Welding the 18 GA isn't tough, but welding the stock sheetmetal is REALLY tough to keep from burning through when you have innershield.

If I were a halfway decent fitter, then it'd be way better. I had to fill a lot of gaps. But hey, it's not a show car. Just don't look too closely at it when you see it. It's kinda ghetto because there's parts of the old tunnel inside my new tunnel, and it doesn't look so hot from underneath. To do it the right way I'd have to cut out the entire floor and do it all over, and you couldn't pay me enough to do that.

My only concern is getting the inside of the tunnel painted. I'd hate for all this stuff to get rusty and have to re-do it.

allright, I need some advice on my sliders.

Since my sliders are going to be welded to my rocker panels, I want to make sure they don't flex too much. Sliders won't do me much good if they bend the rocker panels from flexing.

I've decided I want 1/4" wall 2x3 or 2x4 for my slider, and I'll have 3 to 4 legs coming off the frame.

My question is regarding the legs. I'd like to use .120 wall if possible, or even .180 wall for the legs (mainly to save weight). When sliders flex up towards the rocker panel, are the legs flexing themselves, or is the joint between leg and frame flexing? What's the best way to beef up my legs so the sliders don't bend? I'll use 1/4" on the legs if it'll make a difference, but if .120 wall will be stout enough, I'd rather go that route. What are your thoughts everyone?

This thread has over 8000 views, so I know somebody's watching. Feel free to chime in, I'd like to buy my metal tomorrow if possible.

getting an exo done by Ben Hanks was a little more money than I wanted to dish out. So it looks like I'll either be buying a bender and building my own cage (zero experience there), or trying to find someone else that already has one and will help me build one cheap.

I am not implying that Ben Hanks' prices are outrageous. They're not, and I'm sure they're worth every dime, it was just barely over the price I wanted to pay. I've been wanting my own bender anyway. I think I'll download the gottrikes bender plans and build my own.
