Geez dude, did you even bother reading what I wrote? I said the closest thing to a trail rig requiring the fewest modifications possible.

That is exactly my point, so how does their "aftermarket parts availability, cost, and age" matter under that criteria that you set forth? But don't take it so personal. Sheesh. ;)

Look, no rig is trailworthy as a stock vehicle! Everything requires some modifications to be a real trail rig, even a Rubicon. I listed the modifications necessary because yes they do need some.

My original question was: Which rig gives you the best platform to start with? Which gives the best combination of parts already on the vehicle and requires the fewest modifications necessary?

I wasn't asking which is the best stock vehicle.

I hope that makes sense.

Those are awesome! Its a Willy's command car! I know a guy that has one down in Orem, we wheeled with him once, they're pretty cool. He had it sprung over on 38's if I rememeber correctly.

Shawn.....wasn't it Spence that posted that WRX rally movie? I thought he was the one raving about Subarus a while back.

OOh, my wife can take that saying to heart, spence! But if I have to say anything about durability of a vehicle, my first samurai was used solely as a crazy machine in highschool. I would take it up in the mountains, and go as fast as i could off of jumps that motorcycles took. (also snow banks in parking lots, until the owner comes screaming about how we are going to kill ourselves). Nothing broke, except for a sloppy steering box resulted from this frivolousness. My friend tried a little jump in her xj, and now her roof looks like a V. Samurai's really are very strong, despite their being small! Hail the ZUKS!:D

I was actually searching for questions on lifting the front of TTB 3/4 ton 88 ford 2" or so, and found this thread.

I think the toyota mini van......

Past that. I think ( actually I know that) that my 88 f250 is the most capable out of the box wheeler I have ever owned.

Maybe my v8J-40 was equivalent too or better, but it was sick, and I never really wheeled it.

But I still have 4runner and cruiser envy.(and TJ/YJ/CJ/Defender 90/110 envy too.)

and I base that outta the box qualification on the limited slip factory front (I believe) and rear (I know) ends, the injected 302, and the 5 speed.

Now back to my search for lifting the nose of this bastard to fit 35's

Fun thread.

I love 66'-77' Bronco's. Add 2 kids and a Wife that all like to go wheelin', take away all the money that it takes to build a bronco = Cherokee. I really like my Cherokee, it is fun for the whole family.
I could go on, but that's my 2 cent's for now.

P.S. Don't let wifes drive. They will just make you look bad!

OK, I'll bite. Samurai. Cheap, light easy to build. Install low, low gearing, lockers, SPOA, tires and you have an extremely capable rig. They have issues, short wheelbase, no power and you can't buy new ones in the US anymore but I wouldn't trade mine for anything (well, maybe a buggy with D60's, Atlas, LT1, 39" Krawlers, but I digress).

I have one of those! For sale even! No 39" Krawlers, but 40" Maxxis Creepy Crawlers.

Well, I'd have to disagree with that kind of statement. Pretty much any bone stock Unimog is trailworthy. Of course there are compromises you have to live with, but every vehicle has those regardless of how 'ultimate' you may think it is....

ok first off I stopped reading after page 4 so if what I mention is in page 5 or 6 sorry...

thinking back thru my years... I saw plenty of stock landcrusers going places jeeps (cj's) were not... but then again I also saw it the other way around as well... just depends on how they were built... also being out of the military I saw what the hummer (h1's only) could do with their diesel engines and high ground clearances yet didn't hear about them at all in this thread....

I have had a few wheelers from a 43 MB jeep to a 85 CJ, cherokee to a 78,79 bronco, F250's and to be truthful I love my 98 EXPEDITION due to I have all the comforts of home to include the a/c and it tows everything I have and somedays its more stable than my CJ7 on trails... of course it doesn't get to go on all the hard core trails but I have taken it DOWN a few tuff ones like rose garden hill and C457 over in colorado... so its not just a street rig...

So Britney I really home you have learned allot on this thread and have a better technical understanding of why men can't ever decide on one thing and the great car/truck debate will continue forever!
