TH400 Rebuild

So I piced up a TH400 to go behind the 454. I'm going to rebuild the tranny and install a new output shaft for the dana 300 adapter. This tranny came out of an 1976 motorhome with a 454. This sucker should be HD.

Any advice? I plan on getting the ATSG manual for the rebuild, but if anyone has input or knows of special tools that I need to make work, let me know.

Thanks,

I used the Haynes Ford Transmission book when I did my auto. It was scary, but pretty easy. Make sure you have a clean work space and lots of room to lay out the parts in the order you removed them.

I am a big fan of shift kits or even a full manual valve body :greg: . How hard are you gonna push it, do ya need Kevlar clutches? Don't forget the cooler! Take photos as you tear it apart, especially the check balls in the valve body. You shouldn't need any special tools, even though the book will tell you so. A good friend to help hold the pistons down as you remove the snap rings (careful not to take a spring in the eye) will get you through it with out any fancy tools.

Thanks,

I'm looking at a 1800 stall, TCI rebuild kit, TCI body with brake and reverse gears, art carr shifter and a cooler. I will also be ordering the Novak D300 adapter that replaces the output shaft. I have ordered the ATSG manual and will read how to do the rebuild. This is going to be PHAT!!

My winter project is under way!!!!!

Everything that I read pointed to a more stock stall=good for the rocks. Mine was somewhere around 1300 rpm.
hummm...1300 is kind of low. With the BBC the torque goes up thus the stall needs to be higher, so I've read...

1300 was stock for my 289. What did PBB say?

I am pretty sure stock is right around 1700-1800, 1300 or so is stock for an RV TC. Ofcourse stock stall is all relative to the engine.

what the tranny came out of doesn't matter for stall speed, stall speed is matched to the engine and vehicle, you need a much lower stall for huge RVs to get them moving. If you go low on stall speed you will crawl through your brakes but build less heat. I used a slightly lower than stock (by like 100-200 RPM lower) and when I was in low gear I would kinda crawl through my brakes (discs front and rear), I wanted to go to either stock or slightly higher than stock.

So how do I find out what the stock stall speed was? I have searched and searched.....

it's pretty scary when your doin it.. i rebuilt my TH-350...it went smoothly, until i got to the oil pump.. the clutch packs werent seated all the way... took me a few minutes to figure it out, but no big deal. the TH-350 should be along the same lines as a TH400.

i also bought my parts at Axiom automotive.. cool guys. there number is: 973-0700.. they are at 3472 W. 2100 S. its on the North frontage road of 2100 S.

just use plenty of vasaline on the seals.. vasaline is your friend

take some pics and let us know how it turns out.

FWIW, most guys on PBB suggest 2100-2500 stall (I think thats a little too high but thats what gets suggested often).
