Well, I've been working on the small things to make the car more streetable. It now has new wipers (drove it in the rain last month), new rear lighting wiring harness (finally fixed the right rear tail light, brake and turn signal issues) and a one way valve at the gas tank, to retain pressure in the fuel supply line. I also picked up a new set of rubber body bushings with bolts (most don't come with bolts) to start replacing body mounts and fix a loose front attachment point.
The rear wiring harness was in sad shape, a couple bare wires just twisted together in some places, some wire taps.... then there were a few house electrical wire nuts!
No wonder I was having lighting issues! Since I had the housings removed, I scrubbed them down so I have maximum light reflection. Already replaced the bulbs and lenses earlier.
I've been running w/o a speedometer and found an old Garmin GPS that has touch screen issues. I replaced it with a new one and realized it would be perfect for accurate speedo use in the car!
With all the recent work, I was itching to get out on a long drive... so I filled the tank with 91 octane and took it to Moab! From Fruita to Moab is 90 miles, I hit I70 and started covering some miles. The car has a LOT of wind noise, engine noise, etc at 70+ MPH.... need to work on all that eventually. But with the big OD of the 4L60E and freeway friendly 3.08 gears, the car was just as comfortable running 85-90 as it was at 75 MPH. It will straight up HAUL on the freeway and is fully stable/comfortable. It's awesome blowing past people in a classic muscle car! The engine ran at 180-190*'s, had 50+ pounds of oil pressure, etc. Everything worked great at higher speed and over a decent bit of time!
I took Hwy 128 into Moab following the Colorado River and it was a HOOT with the steering & suspension setup & wheel/tire combo. Its very comfortable to push into the curves at 15-20 above the posted speeds.
I stopped along the way for pics, headed into town for a late lunch and hit the road shortly after arriving.
Once back in Fruita, I filled the tank again... used 10.2 gallons over 180 miles, so 18 MPG. That's not bad, considering the freeway speeds were around 85-90 most of the time.
If I drove at 75 MPH or so it would probably get 22-24 MPG.
There is a LOT more work that needs to be done to the car, but it's getting there. Hoping I can do the disc brakes sooner rather than later.
