Utah Lift Laws

First off, utah lift laws are retarded and always changing. You can call the UT state offices, UHP, and anyone else you can think of and you'll get something different from everyone. LAME
Here is a good resource though. November 2004 issue of FOUR WHEELER

This is what they found out about UT:

"Spacers to increase wheel track width is bad.(as in illegal) Stacking two or more blocks, also bad.(and stupid) The frame height cannot be more than 24" for a GVWR of less than 4,500. That's 26" for 4,501-7,500, and 28" for 7,501 and up. Also bad is if the lowest portion of the body floor is raised more than 3" above the top of the frame. If the wheel track is increased(through tires and wheels) by a total of 6" beyond manufacturer's spec, the top 50% of the tires need to be covered by the original fenders or extenders. Mud flaps are required if you've altered the frame height(lowering included?) or if the GVWR is 10,500lbs or more."

Now I don't know if all of this is true and am not saying it is, but lets just say if it is I've got a few illegal things that pass every time. So who knows. Best bet is to check out utah.gov....Print out actual laws and keep it in your glove box. If anyone gives you crap show them what you got and tell them to prove you wrong... 99% of the time, you win.

Not sure if any of this helped but hey, I occupied about 15 min of time in which i would have been bored. sweet :D

Oh BTW, that issue of FOUR WHEELER has the laws for EVERY state.

If you just do a quick search of either here or the Utah Gov website the laws are pretty simple to find. Our lift laws have not changed for quite some time and the last time they were changed it was for the better (allowed more lift) and it made the law much more clearer. here is an excellent post from this very site that has a ton of info in it...if you follow the links you will be able to find out all you could ever want to know about Utah laws and codes :D

throw that Four Wheeler mag away and do some real research

Nowwhere have I ever been able to find anything in writing that states a engine swap is legal in a 84 or newer vehichle. I find just the opposite. I know people are getting their swaps certified but without written rules it seems it is harder than it should be, and you are at the mercy of the state inspectors who decide for themselves what should be legal.

that is exactly what the jiffy lube guy said, 84 and newer the motor size must match what the VIN says. I am only seriously concerend because it used to have I-6 and now has a huge v8.

thanks for all the info guys

so bumpers are an issue too?

so these probably won't fly since they are not even close to 4.5 inches in height;

I don't think you will get hasseled about yoru bumpers, they will catch you on the mud flaps. I have found the inspections to be pretty resonable, seems like if you are making an effort, they don't nail you on the little details.

Go back and read Cruseroutfiters post (the first one in the thread) Does not seem reasonable to me. I have on occasion also been the victim of overzealous inspectors. Last time there was serious talk about ending the inspection requirement in Utah the lobbyists for the industry were able to drown out the statistical data that showed states without the requirement to be just as safe to drive in. If we really wanted safer highways we would ban cell phone use.

and I wasn't refering to engine swap laws...take my post out of context and you can make it what you want but reading my entire post AND the post I quote makes it pretty clear as to what I was refering to.

I didn't read this whole mess, but it's not that hard to get an engine swap to be legal. The part that is a pain is that it has to go through the state inspection stations. The only one in Utah county is in spanish fork, it's a little bit of a pain, but usually worth it.

I don't have direct experience, but I looked into it a couple years back. A friend of mine swapped fuel injection into his 89 wrangler and had to go through the same process (as ridiculous as that is). They give you a special certificate and you have to get it inspected at the state inspections stations.

Why? that wouldn't make idiots any smarter, they would just find a different distraction.

I see alot of scarry driving (looks like they must be real drunk or something)and many times sure enough you pull up next to the lady(usually) at the next light and she is talking on the phone.

My mistake. Lift laws are strait forward.

I see the same things. I spend a fair amount of time driving. Cell phones are not the problem, stupid people are. Stupid people making stupid choices.
