The Wilderness Debate Comes to a Head

Announcement:
Two of the countries most prominent figures in the ongoing land use debate regarding the state of Utah; Brian Hawthorn, Land Use Director of the Blue Ribbon Coalition and Heidi McIntosh with the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance will be addressing students during the Hinckley Institute of Politics and the Associated Students of the University of Utah’s first environmental forum of the year on Wednesday October 26th. This is rare opportunity to hear members from both sides of the heated issue discuss their points of view and field questions from students and the general public. Doug Fabrizio will be moderating the forum and it will be broadcast live on KUER’s Radio West.

The forum is open to the general public, and will be held from 11am - 12pm on Wednesday, October 26th at the Hinckley Institute of Politics Caucus Room, 260 S. Central Campus Dr. Room 253 Salt Lake City, UT 84112.

Interesting stuff...... SUWA is talking about 'compromising' now?
Yeah, they get all the neat/cool places, we get the parts that are already paved.

What a compromise.

She's just trying to sound PC.

Hey Curt's on!

That lady won't be happy until everything with knobby tires in Utah is sitting up on blocks with a tarp under them to catch any oil drops. And if you want to see Utah you had better buy a postcard because that will be the only way to see it.

I was in Moab last weekend and I did not see one hiker or mountain biker outside of 3 miles from town.

SUWA keeps talking about the 60% of BLM land that would not be part of the Wilderness Area as though we should be more than happy with that. What they don't tell the public is that that 60% is out in the flat part of the West Desert where nobody wants to go (including them).

She was definately a good talker. Must have been her 14+ years of litigation. I have to agree though, I think she was trying to be PC. I would have loved to have talked to her about the farmers getting hit on the head with a shovel from all the ATVers though. Her PUBLIC view's and the views represented on thier website are almost black and white.

I would like to see some compromising but as she said, if OHV enthusiasts take 60 percent of the pie that's not compromising; however in my opinion they are the ones trying to get the larger slice of that pie.

Brian made some good points and really represented us well. He is type of person we need representing us.

Good question Kurt!

I agree stongly with Brian on the amount of support the SUWA has compared to the support OHV enthusiasts have. One day I will be able to help represent our sport. Guess you don't have to spend much money when it comes to bird watching  :D .

You can represent the sport NOW!!! Join the Utah Four Wheel Drive Association, the Blue Ribbon Coalition, and the Utah Shared Access Alliance! NOW, WHILE YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT IT!!! If you can't join all three, at least join one! Everyone on this site should be a member of at least the U4WDA. You can even join online, and you'll get a cool sticker, and an awesome newsletter!

So, I went up there to watch this thing, parked, and walked all over the campus and couldn't find the right building. :( I had to go back to my car and listen to it on the radio or I would have missed it entirely.
